I have had no luck with the Gruntz screen resolution patch for Vista from Paul's Gruntz site. No matter what I set it to ie. 800X600, 1024X768 it's always 640X480. It just doesn't work. I have the 64 bit version of Windows Vista. Does that make a difference? Anyone else having this same problem?

My understanding (second-hand, from the Gruntzer PC "gurus") is that Vista-64 is the problem, relating to the screen resolution patch. I have Vista-32, and the 800X600 patch works fine on my computer ... but the 1024X768 patch does not work at all.

The version from Paul's Gruntz Page is not modified for Windows Vista, which changes things in the Registry quite a bit. This version is, however, and works under 32-bit Vista at least. (I'm not sure about 64-bit as I've only ever used 64-bit Windows 7.) GooRoo is right about 1024x768: it doesn't work in Vista at all.

I have the file that was modified by alexandgruntz for Vista. I thought I got it from Paul's Gruntz site, but I could be wrong. Anyway, I have three computers that I use for Gruntz: 1 laptop with Vista Home Premium 32 bit, 1 laptop with Vista Home Premium 64 bit, and 1 desktop with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I have tried all resolution settings on both 64 bit computers with no luck. On the 32 bit version, when I merge the reg file into the registry, it says it was successful, but when I go into the registry and look, the new keys and values are not there. If I try to add the keys manually, it gives me an error message that says, "Cannot create key: Unable to generate a unique name." Whatever that means. I had no trouble importing the keys in the 64 bit machines. They just don't work though. So in the meantime I guess I'm stuck with 640X480.

I have Vista Home Premium (32 bit) on my laptop, and am able to play Gruntz in 800X600 screen resolution without any problem. I never could get it to work in 1024X768, though ... and cuss out Microsoft at timez because of that. One caution is that you cannot use the Gruntz Optionz menu without reverting back to the default resolution. That meanz, no sound changez ... apparently ALL of the optionz are affected when ANY option is changed. If you absolutely must use the Gruntz Optionz menu, you must also re-register your screen resolution. Also, playing any Gruntz Custom Level that has a map smaller than 32 tilez wide OR smaller than 24 tilez high, your screen resolution will revert to the default value.

Yes, I know about the game options reverting everything back to default. I guess I'm going to have to hit the Windows forums and look for an answer to why I can't add any subkeys to that particular registry key. Apparently, the key that the reg file wants to modify is locked on my computer for some reason. Looks like I'm going to be doing some cursing of Microsoft myself.

I did some more research into this and I found the problem. I have two user accounts on the 32 bit computer both with administrator rights (don't ask, it's a long story). Apparently even though they're both administrator accounts, only one of them is a true administrator, and it's not the primary one I use. I tried the reg file on the other user account and it worked. Go figure. So now here's the funny part, for GooRoo anyway, it works for both 800X600 and 1024X768 resolutions. Still no go on the 64 bit machines. I think it's safe to say 64 bit users are stuck with 640X480.

(My patience level has grown very low over the (68) yearz, and I tried once ... and gave up. )

Amazing! I just used the 1024X768 screen resolution patch ... and it worked!
An interesting aside to this is that I did a screen grab of a 1024X768 Custom Level (while still in 800X600 mode) which required 4 Prt Sc actionz and merge/overlayz, which resulted in a 660KB final JPEG. After installing the patch, I did a screen grab (no merge/overlay required), and the result was a 499KB final JPEG! So being able to play Gruntz in 1024X768 screen resolution (again) will also allow (some) future "View the map!" imagez to be smaller. (I am supposing that any image requiring more than one Prt Sc will be much the same size as if I were in 800X600 mode.)

i need a step by step guidance , how to copy the gruntz extraz cd , please i tried on my own it took ages via windows media player i wasn`t sure so i abborted the process. thank you very much When you insert the CD-ROM into the drive, a dialog box should pop up asking what you want to do with it ... I believe the last option is something like "Open to view files/folders" ... click on that. You will see a Windows Explorer contents listing with several folders and about a dozen files. Open a second window ... your Gruntz folder, which should show (at least) a folder named CuStOm (case insignificant!) and the Grunt head (?) associated with a file named Gruntz.EXE. There are probably several folderz on the Gruntz Extraz CD-ROM that do not exist within YOUR Gruntz folder: - editor
- hintz
- images
- several otherz
Select a folder on the Gruntz CD-ROM (and while holding the menu button) drag the image into YOUR Gruntz folder ... the entire contentz will be copied to your hard drive. Repeat the process for as many folderz as you want to have available on your hard drive. If you select a folder that already existz on your hard drive (as cUsToM) to copy, whenever a file (Custom Level) already existz (there should be several!), you will be asked what you want to do: - Copy and replace
- Don't copy
- Copy, but retain both versions (or similar wordingz)
If you have modified Custom Levelz for your own play, you probably do NOT want to replace that CL. If you haven't made any such changez, you may select "Do this for all files" and "Copy and replace". Your copy of the Gruntz Extraz CD-ROM is probably well back-level, missing many of the changez that have been made since your version was created. You can replace anything on your hard drive by copying from the Forum's web host ... imagez, walk-throughz ... anything, by selecting it and doing a "Save as..". I hope this helpz you!

Amazing! I just used the 1024X768 screen resolution patch ... and it worked! Glad you got it to work. What I did was merge the 800X600 reg file, saw that it worked, then went into the registry and changed the DWORD value to 3 and restarted Gruntz and WOW, 1024X768! But I guess it would be easier just to merge the 1024X768 file. I like it because on the large silver pyramid mazes I don't have to try and scroll while I'm navigating the maze. I don't like the doubleclick method where the map follows the grunt. With the map moving under the mouse it makes it hard to click the next square you want the grunt to travel to. Just a personal preference of mine.

This all sounds so complicated, I'm glad I use good ol' Windows XP It gets even more complicated than that. Mine quit working in both 800X600 and 1024X768 resolutions. The next time I turned my computer on and opened Gruntz, back to the cursed 640X480. Nothing has changed in the registry. I don't get it.

My system went back to 800X600 after a couple puzzlez at 1024X768. Like you, I did nothing that might have changed it ... such as playing a small map puzzle ... or entering the Gruntz Optionz. Since the patch worked flawlessly on my XP desktop, it must be MicroSloth's Vista operating system at fault.

I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment, Windows Vista is just another Windows 98 in disguise. This might sound weird, but I imported the XP reg file in addition to the Vista reg file and it started working again in both 800X600 and 1024X768. Who knows what lurks in the bowels of a Microsoft Vista system but whatever works, right?

Except for some oddz and endz, I probably will not be playing any Gruntz CLz for a few dayz, and what I do will not matter if the screen resolution is less than 1024X768 ... but I will experiment when I "get serious" again! Thanks for the tip!
