I was doing a clean-up of my main hard drive, using the Control Panel/Uninstall process. When I attempted to uninstall one program, a MicroSloth affiliated piece of software #$%#%$# installed itself in place of the normal Uninstall process, and proceeded to take over my computer. My mouse no longer functioned, and even the "three finger salute" didn't work! I went through all sorts of contortions to get rid of the piece of C**P, and finally managed to do so ... but the damage was done. It effectively destroyed the File Access Table on my external hard drive, and while 206GB of 298GB is free, the 92GB cannot be accessed! There were over 9,000 songs from the 1950's and 1960's that are virtually irreplaceable ('B' sides I liked); all of my Star Trek and Star Wars inventories, with links to authors, WIKI descriptions, cover images and the like; all of my pictures and associations for our semi-annual company reunion luncheons; and my Gruntz back-ups. Due to GoDaddy changing their software for FTP, I have been unable to update the web host, which I have used as a back-up for said external hard drive (nearly a month without access), so even if I can once again do maintenance there, the recovery process will be incomplete, and sadly out-of-date.
I downloaded a program called "Recover My Files" and ran it against the external hard drive. The process took well over six HOURS ... and reported that it was unable to recover anything ... apparently reading 512 byte blocks at a time ... over 625 million records, but could not find anything recognizable as a file or folder. It seems to me that FAT records/blocks should be 2048 bytes in size, so that may be the problem there. So I will search for another file recovery program, and try again after lunch.
