The new XP computer arrived early. The hard drive is only 20Gb, instead of the 120Gb as advertised, but that is sufficient for my purpose. I need to get a new (optical) mouse to replace the flaky rollerball mouse I had. Tried my wife's optical mouse, and it worked fine, so the purchase is a safe one. Gruntz displays full size on the screen, but patches have not been applied, so the screen resolution is the default 640X480. I played the first 2 training levels with the roller ball mouse ... the pits. When I switched to Mary Lou's optical mouse as a test, the 3rd training level went much better. If I were braver, I would spring for a wireless mouse ... if the local Office Depot techie said it would work on THIS computer.
I have a meeting that will run about 2 hours tomorrow, and will take the XP laptop with me to Office Depot on the way back home. If they can plug in a wireless optical mouse and have it work,I will buy one of those ... else the corded variety.
When I return home in the afternoon I will apply patches, create a custom folder, etc., and take a stab at Locked Away on the XP.
Edit: Won't need to bring the computer; tried my wireless optical mouse on the XP and it worked just fine!
PROGRESS!!!

Created a custom folder and populated it with "Locked Away" and 3 other WWDs. Brought up Gruntz and played a bit with "Locked Away", so am now IN BUSINESS!!!

That's great. Hopefully this computer will last much longer than the previous one.

Now that the problems with logging in are resolved and maintenance tasks finished... Have you been playing Gruntz again?

Now that the problems with logging in are resolved and maintenance tasks finished... Have you been playing Gruntz again? Not yet. I have mainly been using it to create some "View the map!" imagez for CLz (usually big maps) with only GLE images and no thumbnails. I have dabbled in a few CLz (without success, I might add ... no fault of the computer ... (Locked Away) slow reflexes and lack of patience), including a couple when I completed the game-time map and decided to test Gruntz on a large map. Definitely not inflicted with the anomalies of play on Windows 10 (without virtual machine).
Only one thing is somewhat bothersome on the XP machine; none of the screen resolution patchez work; it is stuck in default 640X480 mode. (Which makes creating a "View the map!" both more difficult and, in some ways, easier. With a net 15 tilez wide and 15 tilez tall it is easy to calculate how many screen grabz will be required.)

I definitely heard that someone had a problem with running the game on the highest resolution but he made it work on the middle one. Have you tried the 800x600 patch as well? It's always better than nothing. There are many different ones, post 5: gooroosgruntz.proboards.com/thread/1513

There are many different ones, post 5: gooroosgruntz.proboards.com/thread/1513 Right now I have my timer set to do an hour's worth of paperwork on the post-GLEM updates. But for my next hour I will try the 800X600 patch for the continuation of my 49 screen grab "View the map!" project. (Even though that will confuse my numbering system, if 800X600 works. Might have one fewer grabs both horizontally and vertically.) And if that patch works, I will try actually playing a Gruntz puzzle!

So... Did any of the patches work? Or did the exception pop up again?

So... Did any of the patches work? Or did the exception pop up again? I just completed the "View the map!" and uploaded everything to the Forum's web host ... work first.
Now I am going back to the XP to play ... hopefully at 800X600 screen resolution.

[...] I will look into filling some holez in the Gruntz indices where graphicz set(z) were not represented for (first) letterz of the alphabet (probably will be rated Easy to Medium) [...] That'd be a majority of work to check all the difficulties anyway, since as many as 70% of all CLz on this forum are rated "Medium".

I believe I have provided information about graphics sets not represented by difficulty level and especially by Alphabetical order in the Medium difficulty indices. I have not attempted to identify (many) letters missing from graphics sets (the 'flip side' of the coin). I have never set out to make a CL Hard/Very Hard/Frustrating ... wanting the puzzles to actually be played. Seldom have I intentionally set out to make a CL Very Easy ... a little challenge is always to be desired.

There was a misunderstanding on my side. I thought that by filling holez you were talking about making fixes to the indices... Now I see that you meant designing new CLz though. So I'll let you know that I have already begun work on "X Markz The Spot 5" where I'm targeting the "Hard" difficulty. When will that level come out exactly depends on a lot of factors but it's turning rather nicely so I reserve the letter.
