Rules of the game 1 A dictionary definition must accompany each word in the chain. 2 Word starts at 4 letters, never shorter than 3, nor longer than 5 (Edit: 3 or 5 letter words may only exist for one turn). 3 Plurals are not allowed (just adding an 's'). 4 If a consonant was changed to a vowel last, your change must be a vowel to a consonant (or vice-versa). Edit: In other words balance must be immediately restored. 5 Adding a letter must change the root of the word; same for deleting a letter. 5a Edit: Addition(/deletion) of a letter must be followed by deletion(/addition) of a letter. In other words balance must be immediately restored. 6 If the last added letter was a consonant(/vowel), deletion must be a consonant(/vowel). 7 There must be at least two entries before you may play again. 8 Indicate your change in color. 9 Cannot return to a previous word in the chain.
The winner is the person who creates a word which cannot be modified following the rules.
I'll kick the game off with:
love: affection based on admiration or benevolence.
Example: move: to go continuously from one point to another.

I was under the impression you had to change a different letter each time, is that not the case with this game?

I was under the impression you had to change a different letter each time, is that not the case with this game? I had an extremely difficult version of the game when I first thought of it; the players had to alternate consonants and vowels. The word which began this thread showed me what a problem that could be: love move mov ie mo xie and the game is over! Next time we'll add the requirement to change a different letter position, which will make it a bit tougher, yet not impossibly so to keep the string going.

mill: to grind into flour, meal, or powder.
Now someone has to change a consonant to a vowel, right?

You are correct, I believe, according to rule #4 of GooRoo's directions; and according to rule #7 of those same directions, it is not my turn yet.

Ooh! Toughie! But I came up with mil o: a small, usu. early and drought-resistant grain sorghum with compact bearded heads of large yellow or whitish seeds. That should keep this game going a while longer.

silo: "tall cylindrical structure, usually beside a barn, in which fodder is stored." We are on a "vowel to consonant to vowel" chain...

I'm getting very confused. I thought vowel to consonant came next? I apologize ... my typing did not keep up with my thinking. I have done edits on the Rules in the original post to try to clarify what I had in mind. The word began with two vowels and two consonants (the 'steady state' of the game), and changes away from that 'balance' have to be immediately made right, by reversing the change that caused an imbalance. If player A adds a consonant, the next move must be deletion of a consonant, for example. Whenever the current word is 'in balance', any move that results in a valid word is legal. The game thus far: love l ive li ke bike b ake ba le b ile file mile mil l ... out of balancemil o ... back in balancesilo

sil tOut of balance again. Is that acceptable? Perfectly acceptable ... and you may even have a winner there! I cannot think of a word replacing one of the three consonants with a vowel, that does not revert to a word already used!
