OverviewGruntz is a "puzzle-powered brain game", in which you have to find a special object (called a "Warpstone") and
bring it to the King. (Note: Because the game is named "
Gruntz", not "Grunts", pluralz here always end in z. It's just the way the game workz.)
GruntzThe
Gruntz the solver can control are orange (surprise!). There are obstaclez in their way to the king; Rockz (can be broken)
; Holez (can be filled)
and Moundz (can be dug up)
; poolz of Water (
Gruntz can't swim)
, deadly areaz (like
Tar Pitz ,
Quicksand ,
Hot Griddlez , etc.); hazardous flying Objectz that drop thingz (on you!); Ground hazardz (such as Lava Geyserz)
birthday candlez
electrical outletz
and jumping golf ballz
; and enemy
Gruntz (other colorz besidez orange) which fight your gruntz and sometimez each other.
ArrowzWhenever a
Grunt stepz onto an
Arrow it must follow that
arrow often to another
Arrow . Some
Arrowz are bi-directional
and switch directionz each time their
Yellow Switch

. (These are referred to as Two Way Arrowz, or TWA)
Switchez and PyramidzA Switch with a curved arrow on it
(called a Toggle Switch or TS) will switch until the grunt standz on it again. A Switch with a down arrow on it
(called a Hold Switch or HS) will stay activated only as long as a Grunt is standing on it.
Blue Switchez cause Bridgez to raise or lower;
Green switchez control specific
green pyramidz.
Red switchez control all red pyramidz.
BlackSwitchez can't be deactivated and raise/lower black pyramidz.
Gruntz may walk across lowered pyramidz, but not raised pyramidz. If a pyramid getz raised while a grunt is on it, he will get squished and die.
Toolz and Goo PuddlezGruntz may start out with a
Tool. They also may pick one up lying around on the ground, use a Megaphone to call for one, or find one within a rock or a mound. Gauntletz break rockz and some brickz; Shovelz dig holez and moundz; A grunt using Bombz blows up all nearby rockz, brickz, and himself. Other toolz serve as weaponz to fight enemy
Gruntz.
To make new
Gruntz, one getz the material to bake a new
Grunt by sucking up "Goo", using a Straw ... called a "GooberStraw" in the game. It takez four Goo Puddlez
to make a
Grunt. It can be dropped at a Grunt Creation Pad so that a new
Grunt can enter the game. When a
Grunt diez by losing all health, it usually leavez behind a puddle of Goo. Thus, keeping your
Gruntz healthy is important. To keep them healthy,
Gruntz just
love Zap Cola!
Gruntz They can drink it from canz
(25% of max health recovered), bottlez
(50% max health recovered) and kegz
(100% of health recovered) to heal up.
Questz/BattlezToday, playerz tend to focus on Questz; Custom Levelz now outnumber the Standard Levelz built into the game by over thirteen to one! Another part of the game "Battlez" can be played against 3 other people, but Battlez are usually played alone (if at all) against three computer-generated 'opponentz'. Most Battlez Levelz include little help for the AI, resulting in battlez which are not challenging. It's probably a result of inexperience with battlez level editorz. Adding more gruntz for the opponentz makez it a little harder but isn't a great fix. Note that in Battlez, the color of the grunt identifies the team, rather than ownership or attitude.
Getting GruntzThe game is out of print now, and it's becoming increasingly difficult to find the CD version. A downloadable version is available from RealArcade ... the best I can do to give you a lead ... I have the CD. The price of the CD has been reported to be as low as $14 (when found) and about $19.95 is the high end price. I do not know what the RealArcade price may be. There are attemptz being made to negotiate rightz (of various levelz) to Gruntz, so that it may be possible to legally buy Gruntz CDz through this Forum. For now, that is purely a pipe dream ... but who knows, dreamz sometimez come true!
