...to DirectX 9.0c. Yes, folks there is a new upgrade to DirectX (which is Windows programming that multimedia applications like Gruntz uses). DirectX 9.0c was just released by Microsoft on 8/4/04 and is available for download now on the Microsoft web site. To get there, press Start, then scroll up the menu to Windows Update and click on that. When the Microsoft web page loads, hover your mouse pointer over the link in the upper right-hand corner labeled "All Products." A menu will drop down and click on the ")ownloads" link. When the new page loads, scroll down to the "Featured Downloads" box on the right hand side of the page, and click on the ")irectX 9.0c End-user Runtime" link. It will take you to the DirectX page where you can download DirectX 9.0c.
Why should I download and install DirectX 9.0c? DirectX 9.0c contains the latest DirectX components available, which some of the newer games and other applications are using. It enables your video and sound hardware to work properly with your applications. When I installed DirectX 9.0c, it cleared up some problems that I was having with some web sites, including this one.
How can I tell which version of DirectX I have installed? Press Start, then Run. In the box, type ")xdiag" (w/o the quotes) or press the down arrow and select it if it is available to start the DirectX diagnostic tool. At the bottom of the next window, the tool will tell you which version you are running. If you are running anything less than DirectX 9.0 (Gruntz originally came with DirectX 6.0 software), I highly recommend that you upgrade to the latest version. If you're running DirectX 9.0, 9.0a, or 9.0b, upgrading to the latest version is still a good idea, but less critical.
