The biggest problem is the latency, really. Even though GameRanger worked fine, the delay was MASSIVE, to the point that many fights between Gruntz would simply feel weird. It's not just the fact that many of us are continents apart, but also the networking system itself not working very well - delays of 1000+ ms are NOT standard in any online video games.
That being said, you should definitely try playing battlez with AI limiting yourself to a small number of Gruntz, while letting all of the AI have 15. It can get pretty challenging when you are only able to have 3 or 4 Gruntz alive at one time, especially on the larger levels that require multiple Gruntz to conquer a base.

Is there anyone here who would still care to do online Battlez? I'd have to get internet to work on my Gruntz computer again and get that GameRanger thing but from what I saw in this thread it actually works, so I'm very eager to try it out!

What a lucky coincidence was it that I found that Gruntz was a GameRanger-supported game almost 5 years ago!
As I've seen, no one successfully played via Hamachi, except two guys from the same country, but since it turned out to really work on GameRanger, we might try it. Hopefully time zones will not be a big problem, as I use Central European Time and a lot of people on this forum are from North America.

I'd like to announce that (after almost 2 hours of messing with the game) we have successfully played a full-blown battle via GameRanger! There was some latency between us BUT the game felt totally playable and fun. Many hilarious things happened as MMM and I were trying to siege each other (meanwhile the "difficult" AI built its army and helped in my opponent's ultimate downfall). I encourage anyone who has some free time and a working version of the game to write here and join us, as we'll be probably playing tomorrow as well. It would be perfect to have 4 human players instead of the AI.

It's been a whole day but I can still hardly believe that this actually happened, and with only minor latency problems at that! My only gripe is really that, as swietymiki said, this would be much better with 4 human players rather than 2 so we can phase out the dumb AI completely, although I was admittedly a little entertained watching it lose in the end (because of just how bad it can be). I would definitely encourage anyone who is still able to play this game to give it a go, facing another human player is a huge step up from facing AI and it would be awesome to get enough people for a fully AI free battle.

P.S. To help me (or any admin) out in the future, when an image or WWD is submitted regarding a solution, please include the Designer 'handle' as well as the name of the CL. That will save a bit of time in determining where to store the submission(s).

The image in this thread was from our first testing game on "Casino Conflictz", which is a standard Battle. Of course after that we moved to custom maps.

This is FriedGruntzaholic 's note about multiplayer from 2003: (click on the image for full size) Attachment DeletedI bet he didn't expect how many years it would take for this game to be actually playable over long distances. This is an update for anyone visiting this site that we are still doing matches from time to time via GameRanger and the main form of communication outside this forum is the Gruntz Discord.
