Here is a screen grab of the Chess game I just finished against the computer, at level 9 of 10 difficulty levelz. Of course, this game does not have a built-in option to resign a lost game, so I endeavored to acquire before applying checkmate.

Here is a screen grab of the Chess game I just finished (after mowing my lawnz) against the computer, at level 9 of 10 difficulty levelz. Of course, this game still not know how to resign a lost game, so I endeavored to acquire before applying checkmate ... with the opposing King walked all the way to c2 (QB2 in English Descriptive notation)! I guess it is time to move up to level 10, and see if it knowz how to resign a lost game at that level of difficulty.

Here is a screen grab of the Chess game I just finished (after dinner) against the computer, at level 10 of 10 difficulty levelz. This game still does not know how to resign a lost game, so I endeavored to acquire before applying checkmate, but I could not queen two doubled pawnz on the a file (Queen's Rook, in English Descriptive notation) ... with the opposing King walked all the way to a7 (QR7 in English Descriptive notation)! Notice at the left side of the board only one White pawn was captured. I still had my original Queen plus five new onez. No human being would ever allow such indignity to be foisted on them! Even at level 10, it still triez to achieve a stalemate, down hopelessly in material. Chess Titans has not a clue how to play against a King pawn opening ... and I am usually able to transpose the game into a Benoni Defense (frequently a much inferior one, for Black). Unfortunately, it also only opens as White with a Queen's Gambit (sometimes deferred), so I get no practice playing my own defense to a King pawn opening.

Ehm, GooRoo, I always thought that this was a Board dedicated to Gruntz?

Ehm, GooRoo, I always thought that this was a Board dedicated to Gruntz? The Forum is dedicated to Gruntz ... this is the Miscellaneous Board within the Forum ... available for any topic. So I chose Chess for this thread. I am writing to the United States Chess Federation (I am a LIFE member!) to see if anyone has rated this program at its various difficulty levelz. It plays a fairly good game, but only recognizez three draw situationz: - 50 moves without a capture
- position repeated five times with the same player to move
- Perpetual check (really a specialized instance of position repetition)
Any chess player with skill level of D or above would recognize several other drawn positions, and the game would end earlier. This game goes overboard to avoid a draw, and has frequently converted a drawn game into a win (for me!) by making the losing move in order to avoid the draw. The Seven Queens ending was a case of converting a draw into my win by pushing a pawn, breaking his chain, while providing me with a free pawn and entry into his side of the board, where I was able to promote my first pawn, then gather in all of the program's pawn, promoting each of mine, in turn, into additional Queens. Since the program also has not been taught to resign, but to strive for a stalemate draw (after blundering away the easy draw in the first place!), I elected to plump up my ego by acquiring as many queens as possible before administering the coup de gras.

That's very impressive! I play Chess with friendz occasionally, and I've been looking for a good computer Chess program. If the one you're using is free, could you tell me the name? Most programz that I found are shareware and expire after a while, or aren't versatile when it comes to difficulty.
I never managed to get multiple queenz on the field simultaneously before. The only time I got close to doing it was when I promoted a pawn shortly after being careless with my starting queen, resulting in its capture. It's great to know there are other chess fanz here!

I purchased this Compaq laptop with Microsoft Vista Home Edition (Premium), and Chess Titans was bundled with it, along with FreeCell, Solitaire, InkBall (which I have never played), Mahjong Titans, Minesweeper, Spider Solitaire and Hearts. Oberon Games is the developer, and the version is 6.0.6002.18005. There are six different layouts of Mahjong, with 'Crab' being the easiest to solve, and 'Cat' next easiest in my experience. Chess Titans (playing the White pieces) never opens with anything but the D (or C) pawns, so is no help at all in training to defend against any other openings. So the only way to train with it is to play the White pieces and see how the program defends against various openings.
