I'm back...well, kinda, sorta. What have I been doing in the last couple of year(s) since I was last active on the forum? Well, I have re-married and, after helping my (new) wife obtain her Bachelor's degree in Accounting, I myself have returned to school to finish my degree. I started classes this past August and I'm now on Christmas break. I anticipate disappearing again in a couple of weeks when classes for the spring term begin. I anticipate graduating in 2016. What are my questions? First, as part of my return to school, I obtained a new Dell notebook computer running Windows 7. I wanted to try installing Gruntz on this notebook and for all intents and purposes, have succeeded by following the instructions posted elsewhere on the forum. However, one problem that I am running into is that I do not know how to install the 1.01 patch. I've downloaded it and attempted to install it, but am having no success. No error messages, crashes, or anything. It just won't install. Anyone have any ideas on how to install the v1.01 patch...successfully? Second question: The screen resolution patchez do not have any effect. So I am stuck with the default resolution, which is the lowest resolution available. Any suggestions as to how to resolve that issue would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, I'm sorry to say but I heard that Gruntz does not work on new computers. That's the reason I still have my Windows Vista, and refuse to upgrade it to a newer Windows version.

Oh, but it does. At least on mine it does. MOF, I've got I've got Gruntz running in the background (albeit ALT-tabbed) on said brand new (ok, nearly new) Dell computer.

Any suggestions as to how to resolve that issue would be greatly appreciated. I am running on a 64-bit Windows 7 Home Edition (Premium) with Gruntz at 1.01. Since it has been a few years since I got this computer, I don't recall exactly how I did it ... perhaps I copied the updated version and all of its components from the previous computer onto a CD-ROM and copied that into this computer. I have not been able to get the 1024X768 resolution working, but the 800X600 patch works fine. Actually, the 1024X768 version works ... for one screen grab ... then goes belly-up (when I am creating "View the map!" images). Trying to play in the higher resolution does not work ... the first screen movement and the game goes bye-bye. P.S. I have been working for close to two months to get everything up-to-date for the Gruntz Extraz DVD, in order to migrate to the new Windows 8 computer. I'll report back when I am on the new computer ... whether I am able to Gruntz or not. If W8 refuses to run Gruntz, I will continue limping along on this computer ... which has flaky video (goes blank while I am using it!), and the local computer repair facility says it would cost $300 to fix if it is one problem, and $600 to fix if it is the other. Since I only paid $379 in the first place, neither is an option.

I can confirm that Gruntz works for me too on Win7. The only problem was the installation, since the installer was refusing to work. But there is a thread here that explains how to bypass this problem. Sadly, I was unable to get the resolution patches working either... I tried both WinXP and WinVista versions, and both 800 and 1024 ones. Neither work.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Monolith Productions\Gruntz\1.0]
"Resolution"=dword:00000002 - Gruntz800Vista.reg ... [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Monolith Productions\Gruntz\1.0]
"Resolution"=dword:00000002 - Gruntz800XP.reg ... [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Monolith Productions\Gruntz\1.0]
"Resolution"=dword:00000003
I believe the Vista version is the one I use (2008 date), so try it.

Wait, so it IS possible to play Gruntz on a newer Windows?
Sorry, but I won't upgrade my computer unless I'm 100% sure it's possible. Gruntz is one of my favorite video games of all time. And I would never wanna stop playing it.

It is. 3 people confirmed it already, and I can remember some others mentioning playing Gruntz on Win7 in the past. Also, the instructions on how to get it running on Win7: gooroosgruntz.proboards.com/thread/2082?page=1And if you are still unsure, then why won't you try going to some place where they have Win7 and try installing it on it?

I have three 800X600 resolution patches: - Gruntz800.reg ... [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Monolith Productions\Gruntz\1.0]
"Resolution"=dword:00000002 - Gruntz800Vista.reg ... [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Monolith Productions\Gruntz\1.0]
"Resolution"=dword:00000002 - Gruntz800XP.reg ... [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Monolith Productions\Gruntz\1.0]
"Resolution"=dword:00000003
I believe the Vista version is the one I use (2008 date), so try it. I already had ALL of these options present in my registry file, with no changes visible in the game itself... out of frustration, I tried to search the registry for where the actual game-related registry keys are. Turns out, they were at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Monolith Productions\Gruntz\1.0 And editing the values THERE actually works! I can even run the 1024x768 resolution now. Can anyone else with 64bit Win7 confirm if this path is correct for them too? You can open a registry editor by using Start -> Run and typing in "regedit".

I will take a short break from correcting broken links to try your solution out. I really want to be able to use 1024X768 screen resolution ... that would extremely reduce the number of screen captures necessary to generate "View the map!" images for maps that are more than 72 tiles wide or 52 tiles tall. (The 800X600 resolution only gives 25 tiles wide by 18+ tiles tall, and the frequently necessary overlap further reduces the coverage it is possible to use.)

It made no difference to me ... still at 800X600 screen resolution. Of course, my registry still contains that reg file in the other location, so that is probably why the new file has no effect.

That second reg file may actually be necessary--except they all need to be set to the same value(?). I found four entries for Gruntz in my registry. The first was in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT; the only key there is HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow3462Node\Monolith Productions. Nothing about resolution or anything else. The second entry I found for Gruntz was in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Monolith Productions\Gruntz\1.0. Here, there was a key for resolution and it was set to a value of 3. This may be where the resolution patch set up the key for resolution when I attempted to install the resolution patch. The third entry I found was also in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE but this time it was HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Wow6432Node\Monolith Productions\Gruntz\1.0. Here, I found the value was set to 2 (the 800x600 resolution patch, I believe). I edited the value to be 3. The fourth entry I found was in HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-179637337-4\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Monolith Productions\Gruntz\1.0; I hit the motherlode. This is where all the registry values for such things as Last Colour, Last Map, Resolution, Scroll Speed, Music, Music Volume, etc. are stored. The value for Resolution was set to 1 (600x400, I believe). I edited the value to 3 also. When I had edited all values for resolution to be the same no matter where I found them, I started the game and lo! And behold! The game started and ran like clockwork. Note that I first tried editing just the one value in the fourth entry and the game started but quickly crashed. I think that if there are multiple key entries for resolution, then they all must be identical in order for the game to work; but then again, this is just my theory and I don't know a thing about how the registry works. YMMV. (And yes, if I don't know anything about how the registry works, why am I mucking about in it? Interesting question isn't it? Perhaps a case of knowing just enough to be dangerous! ) As with anything registry-wise, anything I offer here is to be taken with a grain of salt. If you choose to alter your registry based upon what I have shared here about my own experience, proceed only at your own risk. Now, about that version patch...

Hmmmmmm...I must now refine my last post. I was able to run a Gruntz battle in 1024x768 exactly--once. Tried to run a Questz level and it failed. Tried again with a Battlez level--and it crashed. Edited the value of the HKEY_USERS entry back to 1 and it loaded. Edited it again to be 2 and it loaded. Tried it again putting the key value back to 3 and it worked fine; even quitting the game and loading another game. Maybe it has to do with amount of time the "clock" time the game was running and/or the amount of alt-tabbing I did. *Shrugs shoulders* Who knows?

I could not even enter Start/Run/regedit ... this operating system does not give me a prompt to enter any of it. Yeah, Win7 does not have a "Run" command like previous versions of Windoze; instead you have to click Start, then in the "Search programs and files" box at the bottom of the Start menu, type in regedit, then click on the regedit link that appears at the top under programs.

Well, thanks to your directions, I got into regedit, and only found a single MPI-related entry ... the one I used for 800X600 screen resolution ... that works. My attempts to use 1024X768 resolution didn't even take effect, because the location string was incorrect.

Have you tried searching for all "Gruntz" entries with CTRL+F? That's how I found it.
