Yep, I now have Windows 7 and am glad to say I can play Gruntz just fine on that computer. =D Which means I will be downloading some more levels and play more of the game.
And if you're wondering if I'll be returning to level making, currently I don't plan on doing that. But I still will be playing the levels I can download for this game, I guarantee it.
To everyone still active, keep making new levels, you are keeping this awesome game alive and active.

I'm personally having trouble running this game on Windows 8.1. But maybe that's because it's running on 64-bit architecture... I can run it just fine in a window using DxWnd though, so it's playable.

I didn't try playing it here on DxWND before (it kept crashing on WinXP), and while it seems to run the game fine for the most part, it fails when there's a need to display one of menus, like save menu...

There is something I wanna point out, I looked at this page and noticed that not counting all the versions of the pac-man level, there are only two levels made this year, and the year is almost half way done. This sadly means the community is dying. And at the top of that there is only one level in the work in progress forum that I can find. Not counting the ones that haven't been updated for years. I'm probably making a big deal out of nothing, as there are hundreds of levels I haven't tried out yet, but yeah, the community is not as active as it used to be.

There a few reasons I can think of for the much reduced activity on this Forum: - Windoze 'improvementz' not backward compatible
- Gruntz not (legally) marketable/distributable
- Designers (perhapz due to #1) not creating new puzzlez
- Life's 'challengez' reducing the time available, and 'new' puzzlez hard to come by
There are only so many thingz that can be done with the current Gruntz Level Editor and the Gruntz game engine. Being restricted even in such a little thing as tilez makez it difficult to create puzzlez as graphically interesting as "Legend". Duplicate tilez (and no method of replacing them), and yet tilez missing, as in "Miniature Masterz" making it difficult to put a circle under a Mushwoom with a certain background. Even talented Designerz such as Gaby cannot put together tilez in certain graphicz areaz that look good. "Rocky Roadz" and "Trouble In The Tropicz" are popular because they have the most varied tilez. "High Rollerz" has the worst plateau/gully tilez ... they just don't look right with square cornerz ... even the northeast/northwest diagonal tilez don't really look 'good'. Even a graphically challenged person such as myself can rotate or flip an existing tile which is duplicated to create a unique tile ... but we lack the meanz to replace tilez and provide a downloadable update to the Gruntz.REZ file. "High On Sweetz" and "Gruntziclez" have unimaginative 'Ground' tilez ... made even more boring when a Designer usez tile #001 everywhere. And it would be nice to be able to fill the 'holez' with new tilez ... especially Switchez and Pyramidz that link together within the game engine. Gruntz Ia would be nice ... Gruntz II even nicer ... but that will never happen. IMHO, Gruntz Ia (or II) should display the count of objectz acquired in the Statz area ... especially helpful in Gaby's CLz, with the large number of Coinz (and even Toolz) usually present. But that sort of change would require access to the source for the game engine, and someone able to expand upon it. But replacing tilez is a possibility ... with something like WinRezLT (free of the Trojan that virus checkerz quarantine).

I am printing out your tutorial as I type. It seems I need to acquire a few files ... GIMP being one for image replacement. So I am keeping the window open containing the links. BTW, two Gruntzerz no longer have an e-mail account (known to me), so did not receive "Tool Recovery" ... FriedGruntzaholic and Kirby. Yet Another reason for reduced Gruntz activity. And I didn't even list the main reason I have not done much ... the broken links to threads, due to ProBoards version update, one which re-numbered threads.

Yeah, I am willing to admit it's very hard to bring something new to the table.
Because of that I'm kinda glad I retired.
Also, Zu, I do plan on continuing your level Bomber Grunt later this year. It's a good level, and hopefully I can go far this time.

Proving one of my points about reduced activity on this Forum:
"Guess you'd better take me off the list, Ed, I haven't been able to play Gruntz on the last couple of computer OS's that I have had..I sure do miss it! Hope all is well with you!"

If this is because of this failure of an OS that is Windows 8, then I do believe Friedslick mentioned that Gruntz can be played on it with "DxWnd" program (which forces it to play in a window). Maybe this can help?

Maybe this can help? It certainly will help me ... but then I am on this Forum several times a day. When someone is unable to play Gruntz, they are less likely to visit here, and never see the discussions about how to play Gruntz under Windoze 8(.1) ... so don't know that a work-around exists. I will consider a mass e-mail to the Gruntz Fanz with a link to the thread describing "how to" play under non-compatible Operating Systems. I will forever be anti-MicroSloth because they effectively killed the Amiga computer, which had an excellent OS with true multi-tasking back in 1986 ... allowing as many as 40 (small!) programs to run in 512KiloBytes seemingly at the same time ... while copying two sets of micro-floppy disks (I had four drives)! In its hey-day, our computer club demonstrated such capabilities at the local shopping mall, and drew a lot of interest. The competition could only run one program (MS-DOS), and floppy disk copying was slooooow. Thanks to the efforts of that Redmond outfit, today any computer with less than 2GIGA(!)Bytes is severely crippled.

You gotta give Microsoft credit for one thing though.
Without Windows, you wouldn't even be aware of the game Gruntz's existence.

You gotta give Microsoft credit for one thing though. Without Windows, you wouldn't even be aware of the game Gruntz's existence. If the Amiga was the de facto computer standard, its Operating System would have us playing Gruntz on (for instance, my laptop) a 1366X768 pixel screen resolution (full screen) with a little bit more than 1MB of video memory. And WE would choose how our files are arranged, rather than the OS provider deciding (in their (NOT SO) infinite wisdom) where programs and files should be stored. The latest updates of Vista removed "Hibernate" from the list of options for closing down, and have managed to completely hide NotePad from the user! Windoze 8(.1) is more tablet oriented than computer oriented ... with even less user control for how programs are accessed. My favorite games on Vista do not even exist (bundled) with 8! We get to PAY for (almost) everything we want to add to our system under 8 ... and I'm sure that each program will require more RAM than their 7/Vista/ME/XP/98/95/3.1 (and I'm not listing all of the 'updated') versions required. Fortunately, there are competent programmer/analysts around who have created programs to work-around the limitations imposed on us by the people in Redmond. I will look up the program cited for running Gruntz on my Windoze 8(.1) laptop, since my Vista laptop's video is going belly-up, forcing me to 'upgrade'. We need more Tomallas and Hugheths with time on their hands to fix what is wrong ... and allow us to continue playing the best puzzle game in the world.
