I have literally no idea how you solved the level without taking the Straw to the south area with the enemy Gruntz. Spy Gear is saved for later when you need it to reveal brickz, you can't take it here. I've moved the Spy Gear through the RB (I had some time to attack the Gauntletz Defender twice and get the Coin ), then I've given the Springz to this Grunt and killed the enemiez. The two other Gruntz (barehand and Straw) could pass the cross now. Yes, but that means you don't know what brickz to break on the top area. Which, obviously, you can figure out by trial and error after many triez, but you can do that on every level with unknown brickz and it kills the point of having a Spy Gear available in the first place.

Oh boy had I trouble figuring out which Grunt goes where.
My first attempt was a complete failure, since when I was about to bring the Warpstone piece to the King, I realized there was a hole beneath the item ... and I used Shovel to wreak havoc in all the puzzles on the island. How considerate!
My second attempt was less of a failure, but still. I wondered how I was supposed to get past the defender Gauntletz Grunt to the south. I then noticed my Gauntletz Grunt could easily kill the Club Grunt without using a mobile toy, so I used it to remove the enemy Gauntletz Grunt - that way I had enough space to escape the Rolling Ball. But then I realized I needed a mobile toy to lure the enemy bare handed onto the Green Hold Switch. So ... I gave one of the Gruntz to the south Springz, so that he could join the two and press the Green Switch. All until the end, when I realized I was short by one Grunt to stand on a Purple Switch.
But the third attempt was a successful one. Got PERFECT.
Eventually I took the defender Gruntz with my Sword Grunt with and old hit & run technique and refilled the health with a handy keg back in the base. But could also use that Super Speed powerup at the beginning, would be a tad easier (it does work, I tested it out). It's also possible to sneak past the Rolling Ball without even attacking the enemies with the Spy Grunt, but it requires some timing to get it done. So yeah, there is plenty of solutions there.
@SwordGrunt, you mentioned that the enemy Boxing Glovez Grunt to the north was a hint to use the Gravity Bootz Grunt there. However it's not that hard to solve the mini puzzle with any other Grunt - you just have to stand on the second crumble bridge behind and wait till it's nearly destroyed. Only then when you approach the enemy you won't be knocked back to your doom, because the tile will already be gone and you can safely step aside after being attacked. So Gravity Bootz Grunt could stay on the Purple Switch and the player could still complete the level.
@SwordGrunt, what was intended use for the Spring and the powerups? Eventually I wound up not using them at all.

That's true, but it'd be pointless to swap him with anyone else. @ SwordGrunt, what was intended use for the Spring and the powerups? Eventually I wound up not using them at all. As I mentioned in the original post this was originally meant to be the introduction of a series, and therefore not supposed to be hard at all. The powerupz are for getting past the rolling ball without getting squashed when punched by the enemy Gruntz, but it's slow enough that you can still get past it without them - though I remember it took me many triez to do that reliably without the powerupz. The Springz were meant to be used to attract the enemy bare-handed Smart Chaser, but when I played the level I realized I put several red brickz there that did just the same thing... and that makes it so you don't even need to bring a mobile toy up there, either.

Argh, of course! So it turns out I could easily complete the level in my second attempt, where I had problems luring the enemy bare handed Grunt without a mobile toy. I completely forgot that the bricks could be broken to reveal a loop instead of a dead end. Gauntletz Grunt would lose the Gauntletz, lure the Smart Chaser onto the switch, get the Springz and leave. Golly, that sure would have saved me some time I had wasted for my third attempt. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the level. A little bit frustrated at the end, but only my careless playthrough is to blame here. It wouldn't have happened if I had looked a little bit overhead. Thanks Gui

I was able to reliably get past the 2 defender gruntz near the RB by first walking on the upper arrow as the RB approached, this caused the gruntz to let out a round of attacks, but the boxing glove pushed me back out of the way of the RB. From there I was able to freely walk through the RB's path without being attacked again. Of course though, the mistake I made was that I sent a barehand instead of goobers..which meant I couldn't satisfy the checkpoint since I wouldn't be able to get anyone else in. This resulted in a comical fight in which 2 barehands and a goober tried to fight those defenders, whilst being hit first trying to get in. I succeeded, but all 3 of my gruntz were on 5 or less health .

Yeah since the RB is so slow you can get in fairly safely, but it's definitely difficult to kill them without a Shield to tank the Gauntletz damage... my biggest worry about any of this was to make sure the Shovel couldn't go anywhere other than the checkpoint inside the base, as that would completely wreck the puzzlez as Tomalla mentioned, since I used holez as barrierz (too many treez lined up are boring). Whatever else happened was fine... I knew you could send anyone to the top side, for instance, but there's no point in sending the Gravity Bootz anywhere else so it doesn't matter. And I only realized the red brickz would allow an entirely different solution when I was already done on my final testing, so I left it there.

This level is beyond confusing, I have no idea what to do, I don't even know how to get started.

You probably want to start by looking at the checkpointz. You'll need 2 more Gruntz, so you'll have to kill the enemiez outside your base to get the Goo needed. After that it's all about thinking on who needs to go where, and as people have already said in this thread there are several wayz to play the level through.
You want to keep your toolz in your machine until you really need them. Using the two powerupz to get past the rolling ball in the lower area is the easiest solution IMO, instead of sending multiple Gruntz there.
