I don't recall ever hearing the music! I probably turned the option to hear music off the very first time I played the game ... and never turned it back on again. I just played the Gruntziclez version, which seems to be xylophone based, and while not extremely intrusive, I doubt that I would ever hear that part of Gruntz (again). I did find it interesting that you were able to do this. It seems that the software you used would be good at creating Karaoke tracks, nicht var?

I can't believe you've been playing the game for so many years without the music... I've gotten so used to them that even though I occasionally turn sound off entirely and listen to other music, I still enjoy playing the game with its own soundtrack on at all times. I remember I extracted them from Gruntz.REZ a few years ago and Winamp was able to play them as .mid (XMI is a subtype of MID(I) files), meaning you could also use Winamp's built-in converter to output them as WAV files. But I think all of them were also posted on youtube by someone, meaning you can download them as MP3 files.

My wife enjoys a game called "Best Gifts" (and I liked the game, as well ... just don't have a copy of my own), but the accompanying music just seems to set my teeth on edge. Anything that just loops just doesn't cut it with me. Even the 2 minutes and 41 seconds of Gruntziclez would grate on my nerves in a twenty minute long solution of a puzzle. The Ambients and voices, sound effects and such are definitely ON when I am playing Gruntz, but not the music loops.

You can convert XMI file to midi using the program called MIDIPLEX

Each Graphic Set has 2 different music tracks. It's a good idea to link this playlist in here, as it contains all of them (with no ambient though). How exactly the author converted the files 6 years ago remains a mystery. The same YouTuber also uploaded more Gruntz Sounds, including menu themes and various Gruntz' voices. The thing I never paid attention to is that each soundtrack has a different intro (the sound effect that plays when your Gruntz spawn on the map, Battlez not included)!

I do not find any of these soundtracks in the GruntzRez file! But I imagine that if I DID find them, it would be a simple matter to make them available without going to YouTube.

The problem with these files is that they are saved in a rather unknown file format (XMI), which apparently is a modified version of MIDI: Link

Zu created 4 of the eight soundtracks into WAV files, and they are probably only 1 each of the 2 per graphics area ... but it is a start. Obviously, he found where they are kept in the REZ archive, and had the tools to convert them. I only took the time to listen to both Rocky Roadz tracks, and one of the Gruntziclez tracks listed on YouTube. I would never have heard any of them without this thread, because I have that option turned off when I play.

[...]the only way I could think of to get these tracks in WAV format was to record the game with FRAPS, with only music being on, and later extract the music from the video footage with Sony Vegas Pro[...] The quote is self-explanatory - we don't know how to work with these files. This task isn't of high priority though. Have you tried playing Gruntz with music on? It absolutely creates a nostalgic atmosphere and I can't imagine completing a level without it - the game just becomes too silent.

I have been exploring the contents of GruntzRez, and find that that is where Zu obtained the excellent background for the main page. It is Title10 under Screenz, and is available in 640X480X24Bpp resolution. It expands quite nicely @ 200% in Irfanview, much better than the result I had with Paint.net. Soundz also provides WAV files for things such as entering a Grunt into the game. So I will be acquiring things much more easily than I did 15 years ago, when I started this Forum.
