Hi there! I used to play Gruntz back in the day. Recently, I downloaded the game from oldgames.com. It downloaded and installed just fine, and everything seems to work as I remember, except the Gruntz don't talk back to me. I read the threads in this forum on this problem (and they are *ancient*! like, from 2007!) and I seem to be having the same issue, but I was never able to locate a solution anywhere.
Here is what is happening:
1. All other game sounds are intact and working.
2. The da-da-da-DA! voice sound under OPTIONZ plays when the slider is moved, and the Voices box is checked, and the volume is turned up.
3. The Gruntz in the game display the bubble with the red exclamation point when they're clicked on (that indicates that they're "talking") but the only sound is a "popping" sort of noise.
I've tried the various "fixes" referenced in the other threads in this forum, but nothing seems to work. I've also tried running the game in compatibility mode with Windows 98 / ME, and as an administrator (the recommended action from the download site in case the game doesn't work right), but all that does is either nothing, or it turns off solo play (leaving only Multiplayer as a play option). The GRUNTZ.VRZ file exists, and seems to be in the right place and to be large enough (someone mentioned that it might have had the voice sounds removed to improve download speed -- surely not an issue now!) My speakers are set up correctly and are working properly -- I have no problem with any other sound files, just the ones in this game.
Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated. I miss those little guys talking back at me! =)
