Hi! I've been playing Gruntz for a long time, completing it compulsively when I first got it, and recently found the original Gruntz forum page. That lead me here. I have an original Gruntz CD, complete wih level editor etc., but the patch would never work with my copy of Gruntz. I e-mailed about this and was sent (by Kevin at Monolith) a new copy of Gruntz.exe and an additional file GRUNTZ.ZZZ - so if anyone else has an English language version of the game that the patch doesn't work on, I may be able to help. I also have a French version of the game, picked up for 59FF (before the Euro) in a magazine that also included a copy of Get Medieval. Were there any patches issued for any of the foreign language versions of the game? Finally, I have a query - I saw a reference in the original forum page to a Ctrl-! action. Playing with this (it seems to be Ctrl-1 really as the Shift key doesn't need to be down) shows that it allows your Gruntz to be labelled. However, I can't quite work out how to make it work as I want - the labelling process doesn't always work and sometimes I get an asterisk as a label. Can anyone explain the correct procedure? It's really useful though when you need too change from one Grunt to another quickly as you don't need to move the mouse at all Happy New Year everybody! )Free(Will.

Hi! I've been playing Gruntz for a long time, completing it compulsively when I first got it, and recently found the original Gruntz forum page. That lead me here. We're glad that you found us! I am not aware of any foreign language patchez ... nor am I aware that there is even any difference required for such patchez. If you saw "Ctrl-!" somewhere, that was indeed a typo ... only numbers work (as far as I can see) for identifying Gruntz. I have experienced the * phenomena when I hit the wrong key combination, but have no idea what (exactly) it was that I did wrong. - 1. Select a Grunt
- 2. Press the key combination Ctrl-# (Ctrl-1, for instance) to assign that number to the Grunt
- 3. Repeat stepz 1 and 2, changing the number, for as many Gruntz as you want to identify
- Press a number key:
- Once, to select a Grunt
- Twice, to center the map on that Grunt
This technique is very useful for getting the Warp Letter "R" in Gruntz In Space, Stage 3!

Hi Gooroo!
Pleasure to be here. Thanks for the instructions on the numbering - after posting, I'd managed to work it out, but it's good to see it spelled out. As you say, it's a very useful trick especially for Gruntz in Space, Level 3. (Though that becomes even easier if you can get the spade grunt to that warp letter area, which I managed to do - as then you only have to bump the grunt in the arrowed area once anyway.)
As for the patchez etc. - I did try placing my English patched Gruntz.exe into the French install folder. The voices etc. were unchanged, but the level loading pages appeared with English titles. So I suspect that there are differences between the .exe files for different languages, sufficient to upset the application of the patch. The point is moot, though, since the patch won't even work on my original English version.
Looking forward to trying out some of those custom levelz!

I see you were on today, and missed you, since I was picking up a prescription while you were here. So I checked your posts, and found this one ... apparently unanswered. You get the asterisk when you give the same number to two different Gruntz. When I do that, it is always a mistake ... my fumble fingers. Re-entering a number (correctly, as a different number) will remove the asterisk and replace it with the number you intended to assign.
