Today the Earth is as close to the sun as it has been all year long. Earth's orbit begins to take it away and the tilt of its axis begins to add an average of 4 minutes per day of light in the northern hemisphere, while reducing the light of the day by the same amount in the southern hemisphere. Australia is experiencing an increase in the heat of its summer, while England is feeling more and more of a chill of winter. Today is the solstice, or "the day when the sun sits still" (no longer appearing further south (for some) or further north). The event has inspired pagan celebrations throughout the world. Even Christians take this opportunity to the birth of Jesus (while His actual birth date is nowhere December 25th). I am a Christian, so I say
Merry Christmas!
instead of just "Happy Holidays".
