I think, what Wyatt said is a great idea... How are the funds at the moment, GooRoo? I pay the web hosting fee via PayPal monthly. The price is automatically taken out of my checking account on/about the 28th of each month.
Thus, any contribution to my PayPal account would reduce the amount transferred from my checking account, and anything in excess of $12.99 would be available for future month's charges.

The monthly charge is now $13.99, which is within my means, but this month is the renewal for the Domain ... and that fee has gone up to $57.98, which is a burden.
Is there enough interest to justify the outlay?

That is an outrageous increase of costs! I think it would be a good time to research what our options are, regarding the change of GoDaddy for another hosting service provider.

There are cheaper alternatives, for instance OVH: - .info domain renewal costs $18.39/year
- VPS with 40GB SSD costs $11.50/month (or $9.78/month if bought for 2 years)
- Their cheapest website hosting with 100GB of storage costs $4/month
- Or performance-oriented web server with 500GB of storage for $11.99/month

We are currently looking into what would be the best move, whether extending the time by another year, or perhaps moving everything to a different web host.

aren't everyone already using free Discord official Gruntz server lol? It would not make sense to host 20 years of forum history on a platform like Discord. It's more of an internet communicator, not suited for the format of content we have here. And since it's not meant to be a web hosting, I would be worried the files might expire after some time there. If you aren't paying for it, there's no guarantee.

Migrating to a new host presents its own problems. As long as the domain remains the same, the problems are minimal, just the need to copy everything to a new host. Everything I try to do is via relative addressing, so such a migration could probably be done via a flash drive of 64GB (or maybe 128Gb) where a straight copy/transfer would retain the 'tree' for uploading to a new host. I have a couple 32Gb flash drives, and know that one of those is insufficient to hold everything hosted with GoDaddy (a fair amount of it is NOT Gruntz related files, but my personal back-up). So if it came to that, I could copy non-Gruntz onto one flash drive and see if the Gruntz stuff would fit onto another. But I have discussed it with my wife, and she tells me that if Gruntz gives me pleasure (it does), then I should consider spending 60% of what I allow myself each month to renew the domain with GoDaddy. I left the funds in my PayPal account to pay for the domain renewal. I have until August 31st to make the payment, so there is no hurry ... and will cause less work (for me) in the long run.

After some discussions, we came to the conclusion that the cheapest long-term solution would be to replace the current gooroosgruntz.info domain. Now that could be done in several ways: - Purchase the same domain from a different company (won't require link changes, but also gives smallest savings)
- Switch to a cheaper domain suffix (requires link changes, moderate savings)
- Abandon the domain altogether and switch to a simple file hosting service (requires link changes and a different approach to GLEM distribution, cheapest long-term option)
We believe it would actually not be a difficult thing to replace the gooroosgruntz.info references on the forum, as these could be transformed automatically using a Proboards plugin; we could also make a test to be sure. So it would probably be best to go for option 2 or 3. Using a file hosting without a domain would remove the yearly renewal cost altogether.

How does such a file hosting service work? I only know file hosting services that offer a "Feel free to put your files here and I feel free to delete them whenever I want without telling you about it!" model.

Well, the difference would be that we'd pay them monthly to make sure they can maintain the servers which hold the files. Personally, I've only had experience with Google Drive, and even with the free account the files I'd uploaded years ago are still there. It's meant as an incentive to buy more storage from them.
However, I don't think Google Drive in particular would work for replacing our current web host, as it seems to randomize the links to shared files. We must keep the links organized to be able to translate existing content on the forum.

My wife decided for me that since I derive pleasure from the Gruntz Forum, it is best to just pay to renew the domain for another year. I am not comfortable with the current state of my back-up on a flash drive and/or the Gruntz Extraz DVD. So a quick-and-dirty switch to any other hosting service would only give me grave concern for everything continuing to work as designed. Tomorrow I will pay both the domain renewal and the storage fee that normally is taken out automatically on the 28th of each month. (I have been rather frugal in discretionary purchases lately, so can cover the $72 (or so) for the peace of mind.)

Some good news!
Well, I paid to renew the domain ($63.88 with tax) and it turns out that that was for TWO years, not just one.
So we are covered through August, 2024 ... with monthly charges for storage, of course.
