Sure GooRoo, I'll give the JPEG grab a try later today or tomorrow. We are in the throes of the last week of school, complete with parties, parades, and finals. My time is limited to about ten minutes this morning, then I'm booked until late this evening.
I have one more interesting bit of information.
Last night, I tried loading Gruntz (without Active X 6 or any patches) and the GLE you sent me onto my laptop (XP, about 6 months old), and darned if the whole thing didn't run just fine! We opened one of the custom levels, programmed a few items of our own, and then we were able to save and run the new custom level in Gruntz, just as we remembered doing in the past.
I then uninstalled everything on my son's computer, reinstalled Gruntz 1.11 and GLE just as I had on the laptop, and had the same error occur as before.
So, I'm now very confused about the whole thing. I haven't had a chance to think about it yet. I also know that my own desktop gave the same error when we tried this a year and a half ago (when Gruntz wouldn't load on my son's new computer). That was part of the reason I thought there might have been an XP conflict, and we just let is rest for awhile. But now I'm intrigued that I've got the program running on an XP computer. Of course, I don't want to keep it on my laptop, I want to get it going on my son's computer. But for now, he work on Gruntz a bit (but not until his exams are done!).
I'll try to get you a screen shot over the next day or two. I know I have more free time on Wednesday. Then perhaps we can figure this whole thing out.
Are there instructions for posting the JPEG image to the forum?

Just send the JPEG to me via e-mail. There have been so many attachmentz made here that my (free of charge) 100KB limit is almost used up ... certainly not enough space left for a JPEG.

I can't tell if you have fixed the problem, yet, txgruntz, but you could alwayz try opening up a custom level(by somebody else) in the custom folder, then using the "fill" tool on the whole area, deleting all objects, then "start from scratch" there.

Thanks for the idea, pinkgoo. The only problem is that we can't open any files in the editor, be they the templates that come with the editor, or a finished level created by person. I've finally sent my screen shotz to GooRoo, and we'll see if he's got any ideas. I can tell you that every other computer in our home can run Gruntz and the GLE without any problems. It's just the machine that the Gruntz addict usez that won't run the GLE. That machine runz Gruntz with no problemz, and we can run custom levelz in the Gruntz game on that problematic machine. This is good, and with all the puzzlez to solve, that will keep him busy for awhile. The real problem is the Gruntz-aphile really wants to create custom levelz again. So, we'll keep plugging away at the problem. If worse comes to worse, he'll have to negotiate time on another computer in the house given that all seems to work on all of the other machines (they are all XP machines). I'll keep trying suggestions, and see what happens.

There may be some other configuration on your son's computer that isn't compatible with the GLE. It's not an internal problem of the GLE, since it already runz on other PCs. I understand your son, I have some obession of creating CLz that I probably have more than 10. Problem is that I hate to test them and correct the bugz. But, reading your first post again, I saw something like: There's no " c:\games\gruntz\AREA#" inside the REZ file. Type only " \AREA#\TILEZ" (where # is the number of the graphicz set you're working with). Each time the Editor asks you to specify the Image Dir: again, it's because it didn't locate the Tile Imagez on the path you specified (which the GLE converts into C:\GAMES\GRUNTZ\GRUNTZ.REZ\AREA#\TILEZ\.

The error message properly showz just "\AREA1\TILEZ" as the problem, which leadz me to speculate that the Gruntz Level Editor itself (GruntzEdit.exe) and the Gruntz.rez file are not in the same folder. I believe that the Gruntz Level Editor totally usez relative addressing to acquire the filez it needz ... it doez not have "C:\GAMES\GRUNTZ\Gruntz.rez\AREA1\TILEZ", but "\AREA1\TILEZ". That leading back slash addresses the current folder (or file). This is a strange error, that's for sure! I have never seen anything like it discussed either here or at the Monolith Productions, Inc. Gruntz Forum previously. What makez it even stranger is that everything workz fine on the other computerz.

Well, I can tell you that the GLE is in the C:\GAMES\GRUNTZ folder, the same location as the GRUNTZ.REZ file.
I have tried putting a copy of the .rez file all by itself in c:\gruntz.rez, then telling the editor to go look there. It seems to accept that as the location of the .rez file, but it still prompts me for the location of the "image rez dir".
I'm mystsified as to potential conflicts. All of our computers run similar anti-virus/spyware programs, and we all run standard software (such as Microsoft Office products) without any conflicts.
It may just remain a mystery.

Anywayz, your son can still design levelz at other computerz. And everyone can play gruntz fine. That's better than nothing! Until February of this year, I never knew that there existz a Level Editor of Gruntz... and until January I never knew the Custom Levelz! So, you see, I started playing Gruntz 8 yearz ago (1999) and played only Standard Questz and Battlez until this year. And, for sure, the game is still great and enjoyable without any of these additionz. Do not worry too much because only the GLE isn't working.

Well. As a matter of fact, I have the same problem when I try to use the GLE. I just avoid that by finding a CL in the graphicz set I need, then /refers to his own post above/. I've had my dad, mom, even my cousin look into fixing this, but we still haven't found out how to solve this. All in all, I could benefit from this, also.

Good News! I finally got the Gruntz Editor to run on the problematic computer! I have no idea why it workz, but here's what I did. I'm sure most of it is irrelevant, but you never know... First, I removed everything related to Gruntz, including the c:\Games folder. I don't think I'd been removing this folder in past attempts. I know I removed the c:\Games\Gruntz folder, but I don't think I'd removed the c:\Games folder. But I've tried this sooooo many times that I think I did that once before. I then checked HP for software updates. Having just battled my way through a driver update on another computer, I still thought there might be some sort of conflict with his computer and running the editor. They only had a new "software update" program to offer, but I went ahead and installed it anyway. I then installed Gruntz from the 1.11 disk we have, as it worked on all the other computerz in the house. I opened the program to make certain in worked, then I closed it and installed the Gruntz editor from GooRoo's Extraz disk. I did this by copying the zipped file to c:\games\gruntz, then clicked on the zipped file and had it extract all the filez to c:\games\gruntz\gruntzed as it wants to. I then copied the extracted filez (all of them) to c:\games\gruntz. Upon launching the editor, it still would not open anything in the custom folder. I still got the message about needing an image rez location. I started randomly clicking on the menuz, just to see what I could set in those menuz. I've done this before, but this time I got lucky. I tried the "Tools" "Options" menu. There is a box that lets you specify which rez file to try. The box said something like "C:\.." (I did not write it down, but it was an incomplete path). I thought that looked odd, so I typed the path to the rez file that we all know and love (C:\games\gruntz\gruntz.rez). Still no luck loading a custom level. (I have since noticed that on my computer that initially ran the editor, that box is blank, but I didn't realize that when I filled in the path. It seems to editor will work with nothing in the box, or the correct path typed in, but not with an incorrect path. When I typed "C:\.." into that path, it made the editor crash). One thing I did notice was that on the status bar at the bottom of the GruntzEd screen, the "Tile=" box had no value (same for "Set=" and "Value=", as no level has been loaded). So, I thought maybe I should try to put something in there the "Tile=" box. I poked around the menuz in the editor in a haphazard fashion, and under the "Plane" menu I manually set "Go to X,Y" to (0,0). This seemed to be one spot could enter an (X,Y) value. I then tried loading a quest sample, and lo and behold, it opened. I was able to close the editor, reopen it, and it now works fine on the "problem" computer, without having to set the "Tile=" (if that is indeed what I did) to (0,0) anymore. It just seems to work as it should, even after launching other applications, as well as restarting the computer. So, I'm not sure exactly what I did to make the editor work. It seems that the box in the "Tools" "Options" menu should be left blank or filled in with the correct path to the rez file, and it does seem like the "Tile=" box should have a value in it ((0,0) seems to be a good one). Perhaps we kept getting a bad installation for these values, and once the are entered properly, the editor remembers them, and loads them the next time the application is launched. I really don't know enough about how the editor works to give a good explanation. The puzzle creator is at a computer camp this week, so he won't be able to try anything until the weekend, so I don't know if all of the other aspects of the editor are working properly. I'll let you know if we have any other issuez, but I'm feeling optimistic that the worst is over. He still has the instuctionz he printed out two yearz ago with all his notez about creating levelz, so he should be able to handle thingz from here! Also, there's lotz of good information on the forum! I thank you all for your support. I'm sure I'll have some commentz to post after the puzzles begin to get solved. He likes to read the forum, so I'm sure he'll be dictating some comments/questions for me to post in the near future.
