WinRez LT allows me to extract the *.wwd files, making Kirby's project to duplicate the Standard Levelz a moot point. I have extracted and briefly viewed "The Miniature Masterz" Stagez 1 (through 4).
I haven't discovered how to extract the Tilez (or anything else of interest) ... yet. Once I can do that, it will be possible to create a Gruntz.rez file that will result in better-looking Gruntz puzzlez. All of those Tilez 1 through 8 that look identical can be made unique, so there is more variety in backgrounds. Same for Tilez 9 through 16. Where duplicate Tilez exist, but there is no right-hand version of a left-hand Tile, we can fix that! It may not be "Gruntz 2", but I think with some artistic people involved, it will be possible to create a "Gruntz2.rez" with such things as a city Tile set! Gruntz lives!!!

How would you view such a REZ file? I don't really understand how you would do that. What does the REZ file look like anyway?

How would you view such a REZ file? I don't really understand how you would do that. What does the REZ file look like anyway? The .rez file is nothing more than an archive, like a .zip, .arc (.lha, etc.) with hierachical content. There are files and folders compressed in the .rez file, and "WinRez LT" is a decompression tool. All 32 of the .wwd files for the game are in the .rez file. I am now working on a means to edit a .pid file, which is some sort of image file ... that's what the Tilez are in the .rez file. In "The Miniature Masterz" graphics set, where the tubing Tilez are, there are four set of duplicate Tilez; 17 & 21; 20 & 24; 29 & 33; 32 & 36. There are no reversed color versions of those Tilez. I would change one of each to the reversed color type, to make it easier to 'draw' patterns with tubing Tilez. Is all that clear as mud?

Would the Gruntz game itself be able to play it, though?

Would the Gruntz game itself be able to play it, though? Everything I have tried so far has worked very nicely. The only problem I have had is getting to the Secret Level in the one graphics set that I know the proper entrance (SecretLevelTrigger) requirements. I have not been able to determine the proper filename to give the SL component, so that it would be invoked when the requirements were met.

Coolies! What kinda tile set are you going to make first? My personal preference would be a city scene, curbs and sidewalks, paved streets, roofless buildings. But I am no graphic artist. First I would do as I posted earlier; eliminate duplicate Tiles by making changes that would provide more variety. When my time is freed up to do more investigating and experimenting, those sort of changes would be starting out at the bottom of the learning curve. I would be more useful as an integrator, rather than as an artist. So would-be graphics artists need to step forward and show their stuff!

I am pretty bad at designing tiles like this; for some reason I just can't see how it should look. However, I can work on learning many things, so I am learning how to do this. I have a building blocks set partially finished (I have the easy ones done! )

Maybe make a little kid crayon-drawing tile set, like in Yoshi's Island if you've ever seen that? That way it doesn't matter if you're bad at designing tiles, because it's supposed to look bad...or something...

Are the helpboxes saved in the .rez file, too? That would be great! Every CL comes with its own helpboxes !

Are the helpboxes saved in the .rez file, too? That would be great! Every CL comes with its own helpboxes ! That is the one part of Gruntz Custom Level design that continues to elude us ... creating our own text boxez (Help Bookz). While the combined efforts of several Gruntzerz has managed to identify the code parameters to use the ones provided in the Standard Levelz, noone has come up with a method of creating our own ... yet! With the help of WinRez, perhaps we can even overcome that hurdle. It's only a matter of time; time to dig in and root out the method used in the packaged set, so we can make custom ones. Then the major problem will be coordinating the new additions, so there are no 'collisions' of one number used for one message in one CL, and the same number used for a totally different message in another CL. I believe that a new '.rez' file will need to be distributed whenever such an addition was made, and that alone may provide a means of controlling such changes.

Then the major problem will be coordinating the new additions, so there are no 'collisions' of one number used for one message in one CL, and the same number used for a totally different message in another CL. My idea for this problem is a help-level - database (for designers only)!!! Perhaps a special topic will be created on this page... - Somebody want's to use some special help boxes in his / her CLs. He sends them to the moderator of this topic (you or somebody else).
- This person includes the new data in a .rez file AND writes it down in a table at the forum.
So everybody can download the .rez file AND has an index of all the help boxes. The version of the help-data can be written down in the GRUNTZ.REZ\GAME\VERSION\Version.txt (This file is showed on the bottom of the main-menu of Gruntz). And if a designer publishes his / her CLs with their own help boxes, he / she can write in the description: This level requires at least the GRUNTZ.REZ with the help-level 15. Please download it at http://gooroos... That was my idea! I don't know if it will be feasible (Thank you for this word, BabelFish!). I don't even know, if it is a good idea!

Help me, please! I've downloaded WinRez LT Studio from Blackangel-Software. But when I run it, this program says: " Error: C:\INSTMSIA.EXE not found". What can I do? (I tried it on WIN95, WIN98 and WIN XP!) Only WinRez 2. worked, but its test period is expired now. [glow=red,2,300]Help Me!![/glow]!!

(I tried it on WIN95, WIN98 and WIN XP!) Only WinRez 2. worked, but its test period is expired now. [glow=red,2,300]Help Me!![/glow]!! I have no idea where "INSTMSIA.EXE" was obtained (for me), but that seems to be more of an installation problem than a WinRez problem. I get the impression that if you were to do a "search: Files and folders" for INSTMSIA.EXE, you will find you have it. Whatever component is searching for the file, expects it to be in an 'ancestor' folder, as "\\INSTMSIA.EXE" is the relative URL request (for example). I have two files so named, in the folders of two different applications I have installed. They are of different sizes, so I would not attempt to use either one except where they are found. From that, I would guess that "inst" is short for "install"; "ms" is short for "Microsoft"; no clue what the "ia" means; and (of course) EXE is executable. You may have had a drop-out in the download process, so that the file is missing from the archive. You may need to re-dl the thing.

Perhaps the file on the server is broken. Which version of WinRez do you own? Is it possible for you to mail me the archive of the version you own? That would be nice!

Anyone who wants to try their hand at it, can now download WinRezLT. This is listed as 4,462Kb (4 megabytes +) on my hard drive, so if you are using 56Kb dial-up, be prepared for a long wait. This is a self-extracting archive (.exe) with an install script. The version number is 8.1.67.0.

For anyone who wants to install WinRez on a PC with WIN95/WIN98! The program will exit and an error will be displayed: "C:\INSTMSIA.EXE not found!" Description: INSTMSIA.EXE is the Microsoft (you are right, Gooroo!) Installer. It is only present on NT4, 2000(?) and XP. But if you want to have it: Go to a page like comsia.de/comsia/apelles/install.htm (for Germans, + the file for WIN95) or to www.truview.com/techsupport/ms-msi.htm (for English-speaking persons, without the file for WIN95). There you can download it. I haven't tried it yet, but I think it works!

I was asked where WinRezLT could be found, and did a Google search and came up with: www.blackangel-software.com/Tools/WinRezLTStudio.exe and am actually downloading from there ... very slowly. I have a fast DSL Internet connection, but when the download actually started, the transfer rate is 0.6KB/sec (with an estimate of 01:59:00 remaining) ... and that initial message has not been updated. (So just as I typed that, the display was updated to 0.5KB/sec and 02:06:09 ...) So (for those with enough patience) here is where you may obtain your own Tool to access the contentz of the Gruntz.REZ file.
