Oh god.....[prayer], I can't see half the imagez and the colorz of the forum have changed (bright green). Loading is a billionth of a snail'z speed. I hope the GoDaddy startz up soon, because NeronHosting seemz to be getting worse . Pray it'z only for today.....

Well, it appears that Neron Hosting is down again and probably will remain down all weekend. I noticed last night and then again this morning that most of the images and backgrounds were failing to load, and what was loading was loading extremely slowly. Hmmph! Another major outage. Funny thing, though. I did a Google search on Neron Hosting and came away with two web page addresses for it -- www.info and www.neronhost.com. One page was up (www.neronhost) and the other down (www.neronhosting) Are these two addresses for the same web host service? If so, could they be in the process of migrating to new servers? Could this be why we are experiencing these major outages?

The forum is so slow that is nearly unbearable (or maybe it'z my computer). Have you modified your profile to the Basic skin as opposed to the Default skin? You can cut way on the load time by doing so while Neron Hosting is on the fritz.

I am in basic skin, and like Gaby, every thing is still slow.

I am going to (temporarily) remove the linkz (and the imagez that are slowing loading) to Monolith's Gruntz Forum, Paul's Gruntz Page and "Go to the bottom". That will only speed up the loading of the login (main) page, though. Those changez have been made, and I have also deleted the background image, gradientz and other image loading (additional smiliez, for example ) from the main (login) page. I am now deleting image loading from the rest of the Forum. (I made a back-up of the entire Forum scripting before making any changez.)

Please provide feed-back on whether the changez have made an appreciable difference in the speed of loading. I know that the lack of custom imagez make this Forum rather bland. I will try to remove all Forum imagez stored on Neron Hosting from automatic loading. I do not have the time to anything about imagez loaded when you view a thread. That would probably take two or three person-weekz to accomplish!

On a (slightly) positive note, I have discovered that a code from ProBoards Version 3 that existz in every single Board on this Forum is obsolete, and may be removed without any loss in function! On a negative note ... my inkjet printer ran out of black ink in the middle of printing out the back-up of the Forum's scriptz ... wasting at least 10% of a ream of paper due to intelligible smudgez across each page 'printed' out with a wasted ink cartridge. At least, we had a new black inkjet cartridge at home ... and just brought home a case of paper, so it is only a minor inconvenience, compared tot he web hosting problems!

There have still been no responses from any of the potential web hostz regarding a suitable replacement for Neron Hosting. But at least I have worked out a solution to ease the transition to a new web host! I am now working on a walkthrough for my current CL "SecretSoduko1" and am in the process of truly duplicating the folder (directory) organization of Neron Hosting onto my own hard drive. I have determined that (in walkthrough HTML documentz) I can simply replace everything up to the 'hintz' level part of the pathname with "../../../../" in order to supply the pathname to imagez (Tilez, et cetera) used in the newer walkthroughz. So in whatever free time I have, I will modify the HTML walkthroughz on my hard drive to eliminate any reference to the web host ... then whatever web host I finally end up with will only have referencez on this Forum ... none in any file stored on their 24/7 system. And I only need to use the 'replace' option within NotePad on the backup I have of the Forum's scriptz to replace "info" with whatever the new web host Universal Resource Locator may be. That will take care of the background imagez, menu gadgetz, posting buttonz, emoticonz, etc. very quickly. If I could only work out a similar "quick fix" for the linkz within the hundredz of threadz on this Forum, I wouldn't have to be so concerned about the loss of any web host in the future! As it is, it will require many person dayz to update all of the linkz, replacing the old web host URL with the new URL. When I thought that GoDaddy would work as a replacement, Gaby was very helpful in my experiment (failed) to use the same technique used in the additional emoticonz; any Global Moderator and/or Moderator could assist in the project when I acquire a new web host that workz. Many handz make light work! Anyone participating in the project would have one graphicz area (both Standard and Custom) to update, with noone interfering with their work. I would double-check everyone else's work (when the updater sayz the area is done), and someone would double-check my work. When a graphicz area has been completed and verified, then (hopefully) the person could take on another graphicz area ... until all eight are done. The Gruntz Level Editor Category will have the most referencez to "Neron Hosting" of all ... but I believe it will be possible to use NotePad and its 'replace' tool to ease that burden. The method I would use would be to copy the entire contents of a single thread into a NotePad scratch member, and do a case-significant "replace all" of "info" with the new web host name. Then cut the entire contentz of the NotePad member and paste it over the entire original contentz of the thread. (That way, there would be a clean (empty) scratch area for the next thread to be corrected.) Before that project ever beginz, I will make sure that I have a good copy of each GLE original post thread (repliez are not important, unless they modify the original post meaning without having been used to update the original post ) on my hard drive as a "back-up" to the web host. I am at fault on this, because I have not kept my hard drive copy up-to-date with the changez that have been made on the web host. Since we now have an active Moderator ( BattlezM) for the Battlez Category, I would hope that Battlez could be handled by him.

I found the new web site referred to earlier ... but it is obviously just a start-up, and only has 5 registered memberz ... and nothing of interest. It may have been intended as a replacement for Neron Hosting's server maintenance (now Plesko), but it is not viable. And I still cannot contact anyone responsible at Neron Hosting in order to find out what the #$#% is going on with them. So I am holding to the assumption that they have gone belly-up, and cannot be expected to provide me with any future assistance ... in anything. One of the web host services I am pursuing contacted me today ... with an automated message containing a survey for "our customers" ... and no answers to any of my questions. At least, they know I exist ... better than the others I have contacted about hosting stuff for this Forum!

Hmmph! The pattern fits. A start-up (or upstart however you want to look at it) web-hosting company offers "low-cost" web hosting service, oversells its ability to handle the traffic, begins to experience increasing service interruptions, will not answer questions from clients about the service disruptions, eventually goes down completely, temporarily coming online for a few days to allow clients to retrieve files from the server before going offline permanently. I saw this happen a few years ago over in another forum. Made a lot of people very angry. I'd be very interested to know who the "owner" of Neron Hosting is.
Hard to believe, though, that with all the thousands of websites on the Net, there's not one web-hosting service that can meet our needs.

I followed your lead to www.1and1.com and have paid for three months support and "gooroozgruntz.info" domain. Unfortunately, there can be up to a 24 hour delay between me creating a 'folder' (directory) in the new space, and actually have the folder exist. So I will be proceeding quite slowly in 'populating' the new web space. For one thing, I do not want to repeat the frustration of GoDaddy.com ... creating folderz and populating them with filez, only to find out that I could not access filez! So today I am loading exactly one Custom Level into the folder I created yesterday, and then testing to see if I can access it via the method (supply the URL of what I want 'in place', and actually have it appear!

Whit some luck the web host will accept Spacez and other caractherz like 'éèà"_-/\|.,:;ç^@!#$%?&*()=+ !!!! Windows does not allow the characters \ / : * ? " < > |. The reason is that these characters are used in navigation and for system reasons. The slashes aren't allowed because they seperate folder/file names. The colons aren't allowed because they indicate a root drive. E.g. C :\Games \Gruntz \Custom Question markz give extra information about the file/what to do in URLz, e.g. www.google.co.nz/search?q=h If Windows doesn't allow it, neither will web hosts.

At least we should get spacez. Levelz with 4-6 wordz can be a confusing mess without spacez .

I can take care of the naming when I upload filez to the web host (I usually do anyway!), and will remove underline characters from CL namez (for example) since the font used by the Gruntz game does not contain that character (and many otherz!).
I prefer eliminating spacez, simply because many software packagez replace them with the string %20 (the % being an 'escape character' indicating that the next characterz are numeric valuez from 0 through 255 ... the character number in ASCII). And after the fiasco with Neron Hosting when they changed their software, where suddenly the apostrophe (') became "illegal", I want to make the file namez as simple as possible ... 26 alphabetical characterz in both lower and upper case, the numberz, etc. ... that exist in every type font used in English speaking countriez. No "umlauted" characterz or the like ... very vanilla file namez.

Instead of Spacez don't most programz and thingz use underscorez?
