OK all you computer genius' out there, I need serious help. I bought a new Nancy Drew game and the text was blocky so the game site said to download a new driver. I went where they told me and did what I was supposed to do and now the game won't play at all. Worse yet, Gruntz won't play either. It starts to open up and then encounters a problem (doesn't say what) and then goes back to my desktop.
I did a DirectX diagnostic, and sent it back to the game site, but they haven't answered. I noticed when I test the Direct Draw and Direct 3D that the draw was fine but the 3D failed at step 8.
Help, help, help (if you can)! Please, only answer if you really can help. I've already done a lot of assuming, including redownloading older drivers, etc. Nothing changes.

Uninstall the Nancy Drew game that wasn't working first, if your problem persistz, maybe you need to reinstall gruntz.

The driver was probably corrupt, what was the driver for? Graphics card?

Yes, a graphics card.

Try reverting the driver for it, see here. Remember lookz don't make the game, gameplay does. Edit: If the computer has onboard graphics, and you are using an expansion graphics card, try removing the driver completely and use the onboard graphics if the above fails.

I did revert back to the older driver and things are working fine now. Thank you. The Nancy Drew game doesn't work, but that's because I need to update (Nvidia did finally figure out my problem) and I can't afford to do that right now. It will work at my office computer though. So I'll spend a little more free time there. I'm just glad that Gruntz runs again. I really panicked about that. What would I do if I couldn't play Gruntz?

I hate this, but I'm bringing this post back to life! Arrrrrrgh! Something happened (who knows what) and the final game of the standard levels was literally missing. So was the last movie. Now that doesn't make a bit of sense. The files for the standard levels is(supposed to be) on your hard drive in your Gruntz folder. When you play the game, you only need the disc to start the program. Once the program is running, you can literally take the disc out of the drive and play all day long. OTOH, the movies are on the disc, and you have to have the disc in the drive to play the movies. First question: Prior to your reinstallation of Gruntz, did you uninstall whatever was there first? If not, you may need to uninstall any prior installations of Gruntz before reinstalling the game. I know that was a mouthful but it basically boils down to this: remove any and all Gruntz components first before you try to reinstall the game. However, you may keep the GLE, your Custom folder, and the patchez; they won't hurt anything if left on the system. Second, make sure that you specified the right path on the reinstall. Ofttimes, program have a default directory path, like C:/Program Files/Gruntz where the game installer will put Gruntz unless you tell it otherwise. And if you still have a Gruntz shortcut on your desktop or in your games folder and it is pointing to the old installation and not to the new, it won't work. So if you want it in, say, your Games folder, then when it asks you if you want installed to a certain folder, make sure that directory path reads something like C:/Games or wherever you want it to go. Third, a scratched or dirty disc, or a dirty or worn-out CD-ROM drive can cause all kinds of problems like that. If your disc is in good shape, but you're experiencing problems with other programs that use a CD, then your drive may either be in need of cleaning (they do get dirty!) or the drive itself may be wearing out. Finally, one other thing you could try. If you're using XP, you could try using System Restore and go back to a restore point where you know the game was working and see if it works again. Oh, and check for viruses, too. I had one that infected my Gruntz folder because it was the one that was open and working at the time. The game would start but inevitably would crash for no apparent reason. When I went snooping in the Gruntz folder, I saw files that didn't belong there.

Thank you Fried, I had neglected to clean out the folder and when I did and then installed again, the game ran fine. I am a little curious now to see if the standard levels will run. I know I will have to play them from the beginning so . . .I'll do that. It's always fun to go back to "Basic Training." Thanks again.

If you just want to check if they're fine first, just cheat to go to release all levelz except the last three. Then you can check and play them all again for fun.

Well, computer problems, guess I should ask here. This doesn't have to do with Gruntz or any games though. My laptop's fan runs constantly. Sometimes It stops for a second, but other than that it just keeps running; even when the computer is not even hot or warm. Anyways, can I turn it off some how or make it stop?

I think you should keep it. It will keep the computer's temperature at a good level.

But is very noisy. I'd really like it to be quieter. Besides, other computer's fans only turn on when they start to get warm. Mine is on from the time I turn the computer on, to when I turn it off.

In a laptop, the best you can do is take it down to a computer shop and ask for a quieter fan.
