Well, I really should have read this before I sent GooRoo a pm. I just got a new computer running Windows 8, 64 bit and it won't even install Gruntz. I'm very sad about this. From the sounds of it, I'll have to keep my old computer just to play Gruntz. It won't be hooked up to the internet. Is there someway I'll be able to get the new levels? Wish someone would come out with a new version as I really love this game.

MicroSloth once again messed with existing programs in the "New and Improved( )" operating system with Version 7, so Version 8 suffers from the same shortcomings. It is possible to install Gruntz, but it must be done manually ... 'browse' the CD-ROM with a window open to your primary hard drive's folder "Games". Then select the entire contents of the CD-ROM and 'Copy to' (drag and drop) the opened Games window. You may then (somehow) copy the contents of your Custom Gruntz folder from the old computer into the Gruntz folder on the new ... and should still be able to play Gruntz. Typically, Gruntz will run slower, and in a lower screen resolution than you desire ... but it will probably run! P.S. Let us know how it turns out for you!

I'm not so sure I want it to run slower. Has anyone found this to be "really" distracting?

The reason Gruntz must be installed manually is because the installer is 16-bit, which doesn't work on 64-bit Windows (any of them, XP, Vista, 7 or 8). It will work fine on 32-bit Windows. And as for Windows 8, Gruntz is indeed very slow, both on my desktop and on my Surface Pro.

Well, I found a nice little corner in my bedroom where I could set up the old computer. So I dusted it out, cleaned it and set it up. Gruntz still runs wonderfully. The computer in my office will be replaced soon and I'll bring that one home, so I should have many more years of fun with Gruntz. I'll have to get a dedicated jump drive for downloading. Thanks for your input Alex. It's so nice that Gruntz attracted such great computer whiz's

I have an ongoing project to migrate from my old Vista computer (the one I am using right now) to a new Windoze 8 computer, and have copied my entire Gruntz folder onto a Flash drive. I also have an SD card plugged in, and copy everything I change on this computer onto the SD card, and periodically copy from the SD card to the Flash drive (just did that tonight) ... then clear out everything from the SD card so I can start over keeping up with changes. When I finally have everything finished on the broken links project, I will move the Flash drive to the new computer, and figure out how to create the same path on the new computer that I have on this one ... and copy everything from the Flash drive to the new computer's hard drive. Then I will report back on whether my system worked or not ... or what I do to make it work.

Did anyone have any success running Gruntz on Win8? I have a friend who wants to play the game, but there are all sorts of problems he's encountering. The best that he achieved is running Gruntz through DxWnd on a virtual machine with WinXP, but even then the game breaks as soon as there's a need for saving the game through a checkpoint - he had to alter a value in Regedit to turn off the Checkpoint Prompts. We'll check tomorrow if there are no other errors...

Well, I have Windows 8.1 aswell, and I can't play Gruntz, because of 5 fps drop. I already tried running the game through virtual windows XP machine and nothing helps, the same situation as the Zu's one, works fine untill Ii reach a checkpoint

BTW, I have been trying very hard to get everything up-to-date on my Vista computer, so I can create a flash drive back-up of Gruntz ... in order to migrate to my Windoze 8 computer. So far, the urgent has gotten in the way of the important (and necessary) ... migrating to a new computer that has a fully functional screen display. (This one likes to take frequent 'naps' ... in the middle of my work sessions! I have to fiddle with the laptop screen to get it to come back on ... not fun.

Hey all. Writing this in the hopes that it may help someone who finds themselves in a similar situation as mine. I recently rediscovered Gruntz, but my PC runs Windows 8, so the game wasn't immediately compatible. After following the procedures mentioned in the first post of this thread, I faced the same problems as Phenomenalny did: Game opens fine, menus work, but once you are in a level the framerate drops to something unplayable. After a long search and lots of trial and error, my solution was to use a program called D3DWindower to run the game in windowed mode, which for some reason fixes the slow-mo problem. So far I've had no other problems, and even with the huge nostalgia the game is as fun as I remember it! Cheers to any and all who may read this

OMG IT ACTUALLY WORKS! God bless you, Friedslick6! Nostalgia times are back! Edit: Well, my joy didn't last long, because checkpoints still don't work.. Is there a way to disable them via regedit or something?

Well, my joy didn't last long, because checkpoints still don't work.. Is there a way to disable them via regedit or something? Yes. Enter Regedit and use CTRL+F to find any entries containing "Gruntz". At least one of them should contain a "1.0" folder. Click on it to see if a lot of files will show up as its contents. If yes, then one of them should be called CheckpointPrompts. Change the value from 1 to 0 and there you go.

Is there a way to disable them via regedit or something? Hmm. The issue you described extends to all dialogue boxes, including the custom level selection dialogue box. This (invalid or deleted file) new settings file fixed the issue for me, and hopefully everyone else. I've updated my post to include the new settings file, too. I've also simplified the guide.

At the rate my current laptop video is degrading, I may be forced to go to Windoze 8.1 myself. Rest assured that this link will be the first thread I visit on the new computer!

I would recommend going the extra mile to get yourself Win7 for your new PC, because from the looks of it, even Win10 (available in about 6 months or so) isn't going to be the nicest of experiences.

Actually, win 8.1 is s better choice for laptop because it runs much faster and eat less RAM then win 7, and if you worried that there is no start menu, just download start8 and voila
