Interesting! On the reconstructed computer, Gruntz plays virtually undistinguishably from an old XP machine. On this computer, it is unplayable, due to choppy mouse movements, and extremely slow frame rate of ALL of the Gruntz animations. I am tempted to erase Gruntz from this computer and SneakerNet via a flash drive from the resurrected computer, and install it here. I will keep you posted on my progress (or lack thereof). It wouldn't be right to play on the old one, since I ceded it to my wife as a replacement for her desktop computer with a power-up password ... that neither of us knows. I apparently set it while she was in the convalescent center, and was interrupted and failed to record it. With case sensitivity, I could use the correct string, but with the wrong case in places. And my passwords are all long ones (minimum 16 characters with both cases, punctuation, numbers, etc.), with many ways to mis-enter the string.

I did the 'SneakerNet' thing, and set compatibility to XP SP3 with dgVooDoo and completed the 'Standard' Rocky Roadz Questz at 1024X768 screen resolution, and at normal speed! I see no difference in play from my original computer (XP) under Windows 10 compatibility.
Take courage, friends! Gruntz continues to have life, and I am now back to being a meaningful participant.
Now I just have to try to remember everything that I should have been doing since Windows 7 was replaced, and my ability to play Gruntz went away with it.

Heya guyz, read through the thread and it seems I have a unique problem. Installed the compatibility patch and created the Gruntz.sav file, but I can't even open Gruntz! The error message I get says "Can't get the primary surface. DirectX 5 is required (3002)" Tried everything but I can't get it working!
Running on Windows 7 x64, Lenovo Thinkpad t420. Any ideas?

Directx5 is very old, and I am using the current version on my 64-bit Windows10 system with no complaints.
I am reasonably sure that you could find Directx (free) via an online lookup, as Google.
I am surprised you even have such a problem, as Directx updates are pretty automatic, and always seem to be backward compatible.

That is a weird error message indeed, because Windows 7 comes with DirectX 11 by default. If in doubt, you can always open the Start Menu, type in "dxdiag" without the quotation marks and hit enter. You can verify your DirectX version there.

Try launching the game while holding Shift. A window with settings should pop up, maybe something from here will fix the problem. If not, reinstalling (or updating) DirectX might fix the issue, but I suppose you have already tried that.

Hi everyone, I just managed to install the game after more than a decade not playing it. What I had to do to play on my Windows 10 x64 machine was to : 1. get the game s filez, using an ISO version (found on the internetz) and DeamonTool 2. Stratigacally copy the content of the directories GAME and DATA in the Gruntz folder I wanted everything to be put in 3. Dowload and run the patch v1.01 from here (not a dead link at last - www.fileplanet.com/archive/p-30693/Gruntz-v1-01) and locate the gruntz.exe that I just placed in my Gruntz folder. 4. Play the game ans smile like a child after so many years Hope this helpz someone.

Of course the ISO file is just a replacement for the CD if you don't have it anymore. The 1.01 patch (and the resolution patch, and several other game-related files) are all available for download in The List of Utilities, Tutorials and Custom Tilesets.
