Have you tried changing the composition of your Windows Vista (I think it should be under Personalize if you right-click the desktop) to Classic Windows? Maybe this will help.
Another thing you can try is right-clicking the Gruntz shortcut, then Properties, then Compatibility, and setting it to use compatibility with Windows XP.

I've improved my Gruntz compatibility setup. It should be completely portable, and I'd like to test it out. You can download it here. Extract the contents of the archive to your Gruntz installation directory, and then run the "Gruntz.vbs" VisualBasic Script. This script runs the "Gruntz.bat" batch file in the background and as an administrator. The batch file operates as follows: - Sets the current directory to the location of the batch file (the Gruntz installation directory).
- Sets the Application Data path to the current directory for the batch file session.
- Determines the computer's processor architecture.
- Starts Borderless Gaming.
Borderless Gaming resizes the game window to fill the entire screen resolution. - Checks if "Hook.ini" exists, and if not, writes it.
- Checks if WinCDEmu is installed (up to 5 times before terminating), and if not, starts the installer and checks again after it's closed.
WinCDEmu is a compact virtual disk manager. - Mounts a minimal "Gruntz.iso" disk image to a virtual drive using WinCDEmu.
- Sets the screen resolution to 1024x768 with MultiRes.
MultiRes is a screen resolution changing program compatible with x64 architecture. - Sets the music volume to 100%, and the video resolution to 1024x768 in Gruntz and the Gruntz Demo.
- Starts D3DWindower and waits for it to close.
D3DWindower makes Gruntz completely compatible with x64 architecture. - Closes Borderless Gaming.
- Restores the original screen resolution with MultiRes.
- Unmounts the virtual drive with WinCDEmu.
To start an executable with D3DWindower, double-click its entry in the D3DWindower window's list. I've also included multiple entries in D3DWindower's list for potential alternative executables. They are: - ./Gruntz (v1.0).exe
- ./Demo/Gruntz (Demo).exe
- ./Polish/Gruntz (Polish).exe
After selecting an entry, you can remove it by pressing the Delete key. You can also change the entry directories after closing D3DWindower by editing the KnownProgram category in "Hook.ini". Known Issues: - Videos and the loading bar animation will not resize. (D3DWindower issue)
- Dialogue boxes will often disappear until the Gruntz window is reselected. (?)
- The system cursor will occasionally become displaced or visible during game play. Opening the Help splash screen and exiting it will reset the cursor position.

WHY GAME SCREEN IS SO BIG? MultiRes sets the screen resolution to 1024x768, then the game's resolution is set to 1024x768, then Borderless Gaming resizes the game window to fill the screen.

OMG IT ACTUALLY WORKS! God bless you, Friedslick6! Nostalgia times are back! Edit: Well, my joy didn't last long, because checkpoints still don't work.. Is there a way to disable them via regedit or something? Hmm. The issue you described extends to all dialogue boxes, including the custom level selection dialogue box. This new settings file fixed the issue for me, and hopefully everyone else. I've updated my post to include the new settings file, too. I've also simplified the guide. Excuse me, guys, I just found this forum, and by following the instructions i got the game to work, but even by downloading the second gruntz.dxw, the game crashes at dialogue boxes, how should I proceed? Grateful in antecipation for your help!

Grateful in antecipation for your help! What I will likely do when I finally am forced to leave the Vista operating system, is avoid the dialog boxes. And when it is obvious that the dialogue box cannot be avoided, I will create a version of the puzzle with the Gruntz Level Editor, removing the dialogue box entirely. And if that is required, I will probably make my altered versions of those puzzles available with a separate download link for those unfortunates who have the problem.

I was motivated to write up a proper solution to running Gruntz on a 64-bit OS, after posting a similar one for Pekka Kana 2. D3DWindower will work, but it is no longer in development and incompatible with many programs. As an alternative, I suggest DxWnd. DxWnd allows you to create a customisable runtime graphics modifier similar to D3DWindower, but with more options and features. I've mentioned using DxWnd to run Gruntz in the past, but I wanted to expand on that (and improve the default target settings for Gruntz in DxWnd). Using DxWnd, I can play Gruntz at full speed on Windows 8.1 in windowed mode. Here's the instructions on how: - Download DxWnd
- Download this (invalid or deleted file) importable settings file for Gruntz.
- Open DxWnd
- Select Gruntz from the configuration list.
- From the "Edit" menu or context menu, select "Delete"
- From the "File" menu, select "Import"
- In the "Open" window:
- Navigate to the downloaded file's location
- Select the downloaded file.
- Select the "Open" button.
[li]Select Gruntz from the configuration list. [/li][li]From the "Edit" menu or context menu, select "Modify"[/li][li]In the "Target" window:[/li] - In the "Main" tab, in the "Path:" text field, input the Gruntz executable path (the default path is "C:\Games\Gruntz\GRUNTZ.EXE")
- Select the "OK" button
[/ul] Note that there is a limitation to running Gruntz in a window. The cursor must always be visible in order to navigate dialogue menus. If you do not want this, or would prefer to run the game in fullscreen mode: (Assuming you have followed the above instructions) - Select Gruntz from the configuration list.
- From the "Edit" menu or context menu, select "Modify"
- In the "Target" window:
- In the "Main" tab, in the "Generic" group, deactivate the "Run in Window" flag
- Select the "OK" button
[/ul] You can only switch windows (Alt+Tab) in windowed mode. Also, some graphics cards may have an issue where animated images will leave artefacts on the status bar. I've recently tried to play gruntz again, after forgetting about it for many years and also have the problem with the horrendous lag. I've tried this solution but I can't really understand how it works. I have the program DXWnd, but there is no option for import under the file tab, don't exactly get where to add the file. [/quote]

DxWnd is constantly changing. I no longer recommend this solution anyway, it is flawed. I instead ask that you look at the latest solution I've posted above. The previous solution I posted has been removed to prevent further confusion.

I've improved my Gruntz compatibility setup. It should be completely portable, and I'd like to test it out. You can download it here. Extract the contents of the archive to your Gruntz installation directory, and then run "Gruntz.vbs". The VisualBasic Script only hides the "Gruntz.bat" console window (which can be run directly instead, if you want.) The batch file operates as follows: - Sets the current directory to the location of the batch file (the Gruntz installation directory).
- Sets the Application Data path to the current directory for the batch file session.
- Starts Borderless Gaming.
Borderless Gaming resizes the game window to fill the entire screen resolution. - Checks if "Hook.ini" exists, and if not, writes it.
- Checks if WinCDEmu is installed, and if not, starts the installer and checks again after it's closed.
- Sets the music volume to 100%, and the video resolution to 1024x768 in Gruntz.
Now that problem happening (Only happens on my desktop) : When i opening Gruntz.bat,it opens the WinCDEmu setup. But when it finishes,It ask always to open WinCDEmu.

When i opening Gruntz.bat,it opens the WinCDEmu setup. But when it finishes,It ask always to open WinCDEmu. Perhaps this issue is due to not having administrator permissions... I've updated the setup to run the batch file from the vbscript file as an administrator by default. I've also improved and updated the Borderless Gaming setup. You must either run the Gruntz.vbs VisualBasic script file (recommended), or run the Gruntz.bat Batch file as an administrator. Download

It still happening.Only it just no asking Some debugging is in order then. Which version of Windows are you running? Does WinCDEmu successfully install? If so: Please open the registry editor, and Search (Ctrl+F) for Keys named "WinCDEmu" containing an "InstallLocation" value. Where is the "WinCDEmu" key/s located in the registry? What is the "InstallLocation" value's data? EDIT: Also, is your computer's operating system 32-bit or 64-bit? I think I may have found a problem...

Operating system is 32 bit but my computer is 64 bit Ah, there's the problem. I thought so. Try out this new setup. The batch file detects the computer's operating system architecture and looks for the correct registry key paths. It also attempts to detect if WinCDEmu is installed a maximum of 5 times before the batch file is terminated. Download

Yeah the mouse occasionally messes up for me also, my cursor just disappears for a while, every couple minutes or so. I didn't actually use the patch in this thread though, I just manually installed some of the programz, but it should work the same way. The game is still a little bit laggy for me but now it's playable at least.
