Hey, thankz a lot for thiz patch! The game iz not laggy anymore! However the cursor seemz to behave wierdly in the menu, not to mention the pixelized look. Iz it something fixable? I fixed the bad window upscaling by avoiding it. I have MultiRes set the screen resolution to 1024x768 instead of 1280x960, the resolution I used while I was testing the script. The cursor behaviour cannot be fixed in either DxWnd or D3DWindower unfortunately. Opening the Help splash screen and exiting it will reset the cursor position. It's very hard to make this game fully compatible, but I think this is the best I can do without specialised code. At very least, everything is usable. I probably won't make any more updates to the compatibility setup until better solutions show up.

What a shame, I guesz that iz all it can be done for now. At least menuz can be navigated through the keyboard keyz and cutscenez can be seen at anytime if extracted to video files and the most important is achieved: the gameplay.
I will stick around Windows 7 until the end of the support but I will make sure that I have the Windows 7 laptop around in the future to ensure full compactibility in long-term.
Thiz game definitely deservez a remake. Everything done by root but the same old game, just adapted to the current technology. A person can dream.

Hello, Friedslick6. I just wanted to thank you so much for creating this patch and for helping us run Gruntz properly. I had feared that I would never be able to do puzzlez or battlez again but here I am playing Gruntz once more on my 64-bit Windows 8 machine with absolutely no frame drops.
And I agree with what Percentage said. We absolutely do need a remake of Gruntz.

Did anyone have any success running Gruntz on Win8? I have a friend who wants to play the game, but there are all sorts of problems he's encountering. The best that he achieved is running Gruntz through DxWnd on a virtual machine with WinXP, but even then the game breaks as soon as there's a need for saving the game through a checkpoint - he had to alter a value in Regedit to turn off the Checkpoint Prompts. We'll check tomorrow if there are no other errors... Can you provide the RegEdit value your friend used to turn off the CheckPoint prompts? That could help a lot of people make progress in getting Gruntz to run on WIndoze 8+ systems (including me!).

EDIT: Removed, see a better solution in this post. I did the download and extraction ... but there is no "Gruntz.vbs" file available. Need I look for that elsewhere?
Edit: When I added "File Extension" to the window, there was Gruntz.vbs!

Sure thing. Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Monolith Productions\Gruntz\1.0] "Checkpoint Prompts"=dword:0 Save the above text as a registration entry file (e.g. "Disable Checkpoint Prompts.reg") and run it for a quick fix.

Well, my joy didn't last long, because checkpoints still don't work.. Is there a way to disable them via regedit or something? Yes. Enter Regedit and use CTRL+F to find any entries containing "Gruntz". At least one of them should contain a "1.0" folder. Click on it to see if a lot of files will show up as its contents. If yes, then one of them should be called CheckpointPrompts. Change the value from 1 to 0 and there you go. Absolute newb on Windoze 8 ... how do I get to RegEdit? (I had a hell of a time just finding Control Panel in order to delete an unwanted 'freebie'.

I know you just need to run "regedit", but I actually never had to run anything that way on Windows 8 so I didn't even know how to get to it.

I actually found RegEdit another (hard!) way, but could not locate anything at all about Gruntz. Probably due to the 'manual installation' rather than through the Gruntz setup.exe. So I will get back on the old (working!) computer and copy the Gruntz RegEdit stuff to removable media to copy onto this computer.

Have you launched Gruntz? Alex mentioned in his original post in this thread that the program will automatically create its registry entries when you launch it.

I did launch Gruntz (not from GruntzEdit) and do not remember whether I did the search for Gruntz RegEdit items before the launch, or after. So I will check to see if there is something there now.

GooRoo, refer to my previous post in this topic for a quick solution for your registry. The "Tap" and "right click" methods do not bring anything up to allow me to "run ... regedit". I keep stumbling around, and managed to successfully search for RegEdit, but there is nothing like the path indicated in the earlier post for me to edit a member. MicroSloth keeps making their Operating Systems less and less "user friendly" ... to the point of being very "user UNfriendly"! No shutdown/sleep/hibernate options, no easily accessible "Control Panel" ... hidden method of establishing default programs to use with various file extensions (WWD) ... I could go on and on about the ridiculousness of the "improvements" made with each Operating System 'upgrade'. MY wife and I both agree that we were much better off with Windows 98 ... at least using that made sense!

MY wife and I both agree that we were much better off with Windows 98 ... at least using that made sense!I can help you get friendly with win8. At least a liitle bit. For Run... - Just Right-click left-bottom corner, than click on Run... (third from bottom) and type in "regedit" For Shutdown/sleep/hibernate - Slide down on the right side of the monitor with your mouse, click on Options (I have it in Czech so i hope this translation is alright) and on bottom of magically appeared window, there is six buttons and the bottom-middle is PowerButton. For Shutdown/sleep/hibernate - Another option is Alt+F4 and then choose your "end" option. For Control Panel - Right-click on the desktop and choose adjust? adapt? option (the very bottom), than click on Main control panel? (upper left corner) For Setting the initial program - Double click on the WWD and then choose other options? (bottom) scroll down and last option is Find another application in this computer?. Tick for Use it for ever? Most of this help is "lost in the translation" but i believe that it will help. I'm using win8.1 but there will not be so many differencies. I think.

I can see another problem with this new(er) computer: the function keys are MULTI-function keys(!), and it requires two fingers to use them for SAVE (F5) and RESTORE (F8) ... the key you want + the fn key between ctrl and Window! The default (stand-alone) press of F5 lights the underside of the keyboard keys. So I am in 'learning mode' just to use the keyboard! (I'm getting too old for this!)
My HTML Editor (2006, last update) is no longer available ... and everything I have been able to find (so far) falls far short of what I want. It doesn't help that I can only afford 'free'. The closest thing (CoffeeCup) to what I have been using is free ... for 21 days ... then it costs $69 to keep using it. I want Text Editor type functions for entering data, and 'Preview' for checking out the result ... and split screen would be ideal. I deal rather well with "cut & paste" type operations (and could darn well do without this silly touch sensitive pad that usually comes into play when I have no desire to use it, scooting my typing cursor off into la-la land (unbeknownst to me!) so that I wind up typing long strings before I notice that it isn't appearing on the background!). On my other computer there is a hardware switch that selects the touch pad (or denies its existence). Fortunately, I have added a sound alert whenever the "caps lock" key is pressed, so I can fix that mistake more quickly. When this computer begins to be shared between my wife and I, I will have to acquire the habit of checking to see whether the 'caps lock' key is lit, when I follow her in using it (she loves to use 'caps lock').

I ran into a bit of a problem on Win10 The actual game works without the patch in XPsp3 mode, but it has a huge fps drop so it makes it really hard to play. I tried to run it with the compatibility script, installed WinCDEmu, ran the .vbs file and now the only problem left is the D3DWindower not recognizing that it has admin rights. Link

I followed all the instructions by alexandgruntz and everything works fine at the main menu. When I actually start playing it runs really slow to the point where it becomes unplayable. I can pause the game and move my cursor around at normal speed but once I unpause the game it goes back to being slow. This is a brand new computer and it runs very smoothly except for this game. I have the 64 bit version of Windows 8. Can someone please help me! I haven't played this game in 10 years and I really want to play it again for old times sake. I created an account just for this reason. Just an FYI. I have installed this on the new Windows 10 and it works fine, but S-L-O-W. Hoping the patches will fix it? I have yet to try the work aroundz on my Windows 7 64 bit one.
